This is a vintage original KEL KROYDON resonator made in the USA by Gibson in the 1930s, and a complete pot with Mastertone style tonering which I believe is original to the resonator though I am not sure about it because it does not have a label. It is a very nice potThis was a tenor banjo that I (probably foolishly) sold the original Kel kroydon neck off of about 5 years ago, intending to have this converted to a 5 string. But never did it and now out of funds, so I am selling it. Yes, I agree, I should have kept it all together,The resonator is in very good shape with some surface scratches and etc from what you'd expect from something from the 1930s. It's been taken well care of over time, I've always had it in a case. The classic MOTS back looks great and the red and black paint are very bright and nicely intact. It looks like there is a very faint and elaborate signature on the back edge, see the picture. The inside is labeled ' made in USA'. The inside of the resonator has that distinctive Kel Kroydon bluish black finish. There are five little neat holes drilled inside for brackets hardware, probably 3 of which are original, there are no mounting bolts. There is a 1.5" piece of binding missing by the tailpiece end. There is a little zigzag veneer crack which is not a big deal. See pics.
The pot was the original that was attached to the Kel Kroydon neck and to this resonator. It is very heavy and the Mastertone tone ring sounds great .I believe it is original but I can't confirm it. From what I have read online, the original Kel Kroydon pots did not have labels. The flange is 4 piece and I think not original. The opening for the neck is wider on the pot than on the resonator, more 5 string width than tenor width. It does fit quite snugly into the resonator, and actually it has always been like that and fit well without needing the hardware to stay in place. The original tenor neck had a heel that was cut originally for a single piece flange, which is what I assume was on this. I always figured the guy who sold me the tenor stripped it of the original hardware before selling it. The pot is black and not exactly the same color of the more bluish/black resonator. Has a decent 5 Star head on it.
