Up for sale, a 1974 Gibson SG Standard in 100% original condition and perfect working order. Built at the Gibson factory in Nashville for Norlin-era Gibson, this guitar is a great example of a late '70s SG. Featuring a set of "Tarback" humbuckers, which have slightly lower output compared to many "PAF" style pickups, this guitar has great cut and chime. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising twang and clarity, but with a smooth top-end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of warmth and girthy bass response. Weighing in at just 7lbs 12oz, this guitar is quite light and very acoustically resonant from years of regular use. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action and solid intonation, this SG has a tone that roars with the best of them, delivering a sound that is undeniably classic Gibson. The three-piece mahogany neck features a medium C profile with a 1 9/16" nut width and shoulders that have just enough heft to feel substantial. It's a great neck for fast playing and comfortable for those looking for a neck that is very manageable and easy to navigate. The rosewood fretboard boasts small block inlays and the original Gibson "wide and flat" frets, which show general wear in the first octave and no notable wear in the higher registers of the fretboard. The action is low and slinky, with solid intonation and no buzzing or dead spots! On the headstock, the original Gibson-branded, Schaller-made tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well with clean chrome plating. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots, untouched solder joints, stock tone caps, and Switchcraft jack and pickup selector toggle. The body features the previously mentioned Tarback humbuckers, "harmonica" bridge, black speed knobs, and small pickguard reminiscent of the first SGs of the 1960s. Cosmetically, this guitar shows some honest use, with various small dings and nicks around the contours of the body and on the neck profile, as well as a small targeted area of buckle rash down to the bare mahogany central to the back of the instrument. The original walnut nitro lacquer finish is deep and rich, highlighting the grain of the mahogany below, and 100% stock with no touchups or overspray. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine too, with only modest wear on the plating on the bass side edge of the bridge.
