Up for auction is a 1927 (serial number 91553) King "Schmidt Model" Double French Horn. This instrument is in excellent original condition and plays very well indeed. No parts have been replaced on this horn--even the finger button springs are original! The valves move well with excellent valve compression and the slides all move of course. These valves have not been rebuilt; the excellent compression is factory original as well. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few small dings and pings and some scratching and pitting throughout the instrument, and a few patches of silver wear. The only really significant wear on the horn is inside the bell flare, where there is a large patch of silver wear. A few dents have been removed from the horn, and there is evidence of this on the bell tail. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving on the bell reads “KING/ SCHMIDT/ MODEL/ MADE BY/ THE H.N. WHITE CO./ CLEVELAND/ OHIO". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This instrument comes with a worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays: Warm, open, colorful and full sound; horn is very responsive and free-blowing; the high and low registers speak very well and it is easy to play in both; the F and Bb side timbres are very even; the horn is capable of playing at the extreme pianissimo without breaking up and at the extreme fortissimo without blatting; at the extreme fortissimo it is possible to make the horn have a raw, edgy quality; the valve action is excellent, however the downside to a Schmidt model is the fact that the trigger is a bit uncomfortable to use; putting the ergonomics aside, this is an excellent horn! All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N.
