About Pernambuco / Brazilwood:
This is the wood that gave name to Brazil when the Portuguese ships discovered the trees on the South America’s Atlantic coast, they named the tree Pau-Brasil (Pau meaning wood and Brasil meaning red ember-like). Early merchants and sailors referred to the land itself as Terra do Brasil (The Land of Brazil) and the name stuck.Pernambuco grows in the Brazilian Atlantic forest and it is visually stunning. Heartwood is yellowish orange, almost pumpkin but sometimes darker reddish brown. The grain is usually straight but sometimes interlocked with some dark strikes of mineral deposits.Tonally Pernambuco is widely compared to Brazilian Rosewood but much denser with an average dried weight of 61lbs/ft3 (980kg/m3) and it tends to be more balanced and vibrant in all registers. Brazilwood produces a lot more overtones, harmonics, sustain and volume than any other tonewood. It might be more similar to African Blackwood due to its low frequency response but it still has excellent mids and high frequencies.
Great volume and projection but sweet at the same time with a nice even tone and great overall frequency response very dynamic. It has a thick mid and high range and the bass notes are extremely defined and clear
Pernambuco has the highest velocity of sound among the tonewoods. This wood is very stable and easy to work, it finishes extremely well with any finishing material, some luthiers recommend oil but French polish or varnish will be great too. Pernambuco is great for any guitar part, it has been largely used by violin bow-makers.It is almost impossible to take 2 pieces wide enough for guitar backs due to the small size of the tree diameter.Caesalpinia Echinata it is in CITES Appendix II and on the IUC Red List but it seems to be an exception for the musical instruments use.
