If you're on this auction page, you probably know exactly what you're looking at. But just in case you don't, this is one of the last great iconic guitar designs Gibson (Norlin) would come up with before the guitar industry plunged into the reissue era we're currently stuck in (with little added gimmicky designs). By the end of the Norlin's ownership of Gibson, in the mid 1980's, the company was very desperate to create something new to compete with the pointy-guitars-dominated market: The 1984 Gibson Explorer was one of their last stands. This simple yet unique design has remained a favorite among the Metal and Rock community. Not only because James Hetfield of Metallica played this model, but because of the guitar's easy playability and heavy-crunch sound: Did I also mention the guitars crisp clean tones. What really gets fun about this era is the extreme inconsistency from one guitar to the next (sound familiar... think 50's and early 60's Gibsons). One explorer may have a mahogonie body with a maypple neck, while another one may have an Alddur  body with a mahogonie neck. The guitar has been played and love-tapped many times but never abused. The guitar remains all original with the exception of an old-school early 80's leather strap lock that was installed probably when the guitar was purchased new in 1984! Here is a simple breakdown of This '84 Explorer's features:
