Up for sale, a 1966 Gibson SG Melody Maker D in excellent condition and in perfect working order. With its original Cardinal Red finish and pair of spanky sounding single coils, this Melody Maker has the SG Standard's good looks along with a pair of stock Gibson single coil pickups. There's plenty of sparkle and twang on tap from the pickups and the warmth and punch of a mahogany body helps keep the sound full and round in the bass register. Lively and resonant at 6lbs 10oz, there's a clear acoustic quality to the guitar that translates well through the pickups. We've had this SG Melody Maker professionally setup and dialed in with comfortable action and 10-46 strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a classic C profile that, like many SGs of era, starts out with moderate depth down near the nut and graduates to baseball bat territory by the time you reach the 12th fret, filling the palm nicely and fretting easily. The guitar has been professionally refretted with wire that's just slightly wider than stock, and the frets have been leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime as well, currently showing only faint wear in the first position. The original nut is intact, measuring 1 9/16" in width as per spec for all Gibson's in the second half of the '60s. The original Kluson Deluxe double line tuners are intact on the headstock with their original white buttons, and the tuners still hold pitch well. On the body, the original electronics are intact, with CTS pots that date to 1965 with untouched solder joints. The reflector cap knobs are modern replacements and the wraparound bridge with compensated saddle is new as well. The short frame Maestro Vibrola is original, with a very responsive spring and a new vibrato arm that threads perfectly into the stock base. While these Vibrolas typically have very little break angle over the bridge like this example, the strings do stay in place quite well, and this vibrato design is extremely responsive for very subtle expressions and deeper dives. Of course for greater sustain the Vibrola can be bypassed completely and the bridge used as a traditional wraparound!Cosmetically, this guitar is in great shape, with a vibrant and original Cardinal Red nitro lacquer finish on the body, and natural finish on the mahogany neck. There is moderate horizontal finish checking on both the body and neck, and a few extremely tiny nicks on the neck profile that don't affect playability in the slightest. There are a few nicks through the finish near the rear strap button, south of the controls, and near the neck joint which have been touched up with a similar shade of deep red, and the finish is otherwise original. While there are some expected scuffs and finish scratches from honest use on the body and headstock edges from the past 50 years, as the photos show, this SG has been cared for and lovingly played.
