For sale: a beautifully restored vintage French-made Selmer Series 9 professional Bb wood clarinet. Both joints are stamped with the same serial number T01XX, which indicates the year of manufacture to be 1963. This model was the top of the line professional clarinet offered by Selmer Paris brand since 1960 and was their first serious attempt to move away from the big bore concept and go after the Buffet R13 share of the market. It can be viewed as an instrument more suitable for orchestral and solo playing, when compared with previous Selmer models. Up to the introduction of Series 9 in 1960, Selmer’s philosophy with “Balanced Tone” (1940’s) and “Centered Tone” (1950’s) was to use large diameter tone holes with no undercutting and wide straight cylindrical bore. The larger tone holes do produce a robust tone but the twelfths tend to be very sharp in the fundamental when playing pianissimo. Some of the improvements made in both Series 9 and 9* clarinets over the previous “Centered Tone” included changed position and shape of the rings and keys which improved facility, comfort and ease of playing. The result is that the improved power hammered-cold forged key mechanism is build as solid as a rock, has much better ergonomics and feels more stable when compared with previous models. Also, in Series 9 reverse taper bore was introduced which notably improved the response and intonation, but it still has the robustness and the big sound of the “Centered Tone”. Overall, these clarinets are free blowing and therefore are extremely easy to play, have excellent intonation and direct, dark sound without losing the sweetness. The Series 9's also have a wide range in tone, making them very flexible and suitable for a variety of playing styles. Another reason why the vintage pro-level Selmer clarinets are coveted and sought after by the players is the quality of the grenadilla wood these instruments were made of: the wood was allowed to air dry for 20 years or more to ensure that the clarinet won’t crack and was of the finest grade, very hard, dense and naturally dark with the lovely play of color to it. The superb quality of wood and exceptional craftsmanship is not something you will find easily with the modern horns and certainly not in this price range. The clarinet was just completely overhauled using the highest quality materials available (“Artist grade” overhaul) to achieve longest life, a perfect seal and the best sound reflection: premium American-made Prestini white kid leather pads on the bottom joint, Valentino Masters Series synthetic pads on the top joint (these pads are specifically designed for professional instruments and are a considerable improvement over even the best double bladder pads) and highest grade all natural cork. The overhaul included: Clarinet taken apart, body cleaned, sanitized and treated with all natural Grenadilla oil, then waxed and polished to bring out the beauty of the wood Tone holes resurfaced as needed to ensure a perfect sealAll keys and rods cleaned and hand polished, key pivots and hinge tubes straightened, cleaned and lubricatedAll new Valentino Masters Series synthetic pads and kid leather pads installedTenon corks and key bumpers replaced with high-grade natural corkKey cups centered and leveledThe keys swedged and adjusted to ensure smooth, tight fit between posts and on rodsThe springs replaced as needed and adjusted for a light, balanced playing touchThe gilding on the logos restoredAfter the overhaul, the instrument was fine-tuned and adjusted to perform its absolute best and thoroughly play tested in all keys. It plays fantastic with an accurate intonation and resonant response. The instrument has a big clear Selmer sound, with a powerful projection that can really fill the room. In my opinion, it sounds noticeably different than the R-13’s I’ve tried. It doesn’t have quite the complex sound of the R-13, but it has a full and straightforward resonance. If ease of play or a big resonant sound is preferred, then this clarinet is for you. One thing I noticed right away is how sturdy this model is built. The keys are really strong and the action is tight. It seems solid and built-to-last and reminds me of the Yamaha’s key work. Also, I just really LIKED playing this clarinet. I think it is probably the most versatile clarinet I’ve tried: suitable for most orchestral and band settings, but would especially be great for jazz playing, pit orchestra, and perfect for woodwind doubling. The cosmetic condition is excellent – it appears that it has seen very little playtime. The wood is very dark and rich, with a lovely play of color to it. There are no visible scratches on the body or keys. The plating on the keys is about 85% intact, most visible loss is on one of the spatula keys and one of the ring keys. Please refer to the pictures for the additional details about cosmetic condition. The instrument has no cracks or the history of cracks anywhere.
