Up for sale, a 1956 Danelectro U1 in excellent condition and in good working order. With a hollow masonite and poplar body frame and single lipstick pickup, the tone is quite throaty and full, with the top end snap and twang commonly associated with this low ouput alnico single coil design. The bass response is surprisingly round and sweet as well, and the three-way tone switch adds further versatility to this simple and intuitive setup. Weighing in at 6lbs 4oz, this Danelectro is very easy on the back and has been professionally setup with 10-46 strings. The maple neck has a thick slab rosewood fretboard with pearl dot inlays and original frets that are just shy of medium jumbo in terms of width and height. The neck profile is a medium C that borders on the chunkier side of things, with full shoulders and consistent depth as you move up the fretboard. The frets have been leveled and crowned and have plenty of height left, currently showing only faint wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, and virtually no wear up the neck. The scale length measures 25" and the original aluminum nut is 1 5/8" wide. On the headstock, the vertical Danelectro silver silkscreen logo is in excellent shape, and the original open-back strip turners hold pitch well with original white buttons. The simple electronics work as they should, and the stock CTS pots and molded turquoise tone caps are intact with untouched solder joints. The three-way Tone Switch engages the Tone knob in the down position, bypasses it in the middle, and adds a brighter tone cap in the up position. All of the stock hardware is present as well, including the bakelite pointer knobs, pickguard, and chrome bridge with Brazilian rosewood saddle.Cosmetically, the guitar has light patina from the past 60 years, but is overall quite clean. There is one spot of finish touchup along the treble side lower bout edge of the body (closeup photo included), where there was a crack repair and some putty used to smooth out the Masonite top. The black nitro lacquer finish is otherwise original, with the typical "burst" finish on the neck profile, revealing bare wood along the fretboard edges. The white body tape shows some yellowing as well, but is completely intact and there are a few tiny nicks and dings from honest on the body as a whole as one would expect on an instrument that's been lovingly played for decades.A modern hardshell case is included.
