BACKGROUNDIn January 1964 the very first batch of export model Rickenbacker 345S guitars were despatched to England, distinguishable from its USA equivalent by the 'f shaped' sound hole. The UK distributor, Rose Morris, gave it the model number 1998. Its iconic status was assured when Pete Townshend of The Who acquired one in early 1964. INTRODUCTIONThe 1998 that I have for sale here was one of the first three, and possibly the very first, to be produced in the January 1964 initial batch. I am hoping that it will be purchased by a Rickenbacker enthusiast with an appreciation of its place in music history. It may equally be of interest to a 60s tribute band looking to capture its authentic and distinctive jangle. Please read the following brief description carefully and do not hesitate to message me for further information, images, clarification etc. THE GUITAR I have personally owned this 52 year old guitar since 1979. It is in very good condition for its age and plays well. It did not have its Accent vibrato arm when I bought it (this item is still available new from Rickenbacker if needed). The only non-original part on my guitar, to my knowledge, is the black plastic screw-on pick up selector knob, which I have replaced with the correct Rickenbacker part. HEADSTOCK
A self-inflicted headstock split has been professionally repaired at a cost of £150 (receipt available). Technically it's a very solid competent repair, though the back of the neck at the top is now darker than it was originally (see photos). Please do not hesitate to ask for more details about this repair. I have 'before' photos; the damage was not significant and did not affect playability even before the repair.
CASEThe case is original and still serviceable, in good condition for its age except for the leather edge bindings, parts of which have worn away. I don't have keys to lock the case, and one of the four little metal 'feet' is missing.FINAL POINTS
Having owned this lovely guitar for the past 37 years, I really want it to go to someone who appreciates what they are getting and is completely happy with the purchase. I will consider any logistically feasible requests to ensure this result. Ask me anything :-)
I have listed the guitar as collect in person but if required I will arrange delivery at cost price. International interest welcome.
