Up for sale, a 1972 Gibson SG Special in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. An uncommon and versatile iteration of the Special, 1972 was the first year where Gibson switched to mini humbuckers for this model (instead of the usual P-90s). Rarer still because of the Gibson-branded factory installed Bigsby vibrato, this guitar delivers the warmth, nuance and power of traditional humbuckers, with a bit more jangle and snap in the top end. The solid mahogany body ensures a certain rich and wooly quality, and at only 7lbs 12oz, this SG is very easy on the back. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, strung with fresh 10-46 strings, and dialed in for optimal action and intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C profile that starts out on the more slender side of things at the nut and quickly fills out to near "baseball bat" chunk and roundness by the time you reach the 9th fret. It's a very comfortable profile that fills the palm in the higher registers of the fretboard and retains a more slender feel for easy chording near the nut. The original wide/flat Gibson fretwire is intact, showing moderate, uniform wear on frets 1-4, with lighter wear beneath the plain strings until roughly fret 9, and no notable wear further up the neck. The guitar plays cleanly in all positions with no buzzing, and the fretboard retains the original and rare two-ply black/white binding. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and the stock nut is present. On the headstock, the original Gibson Deluxe double line tuners with metal tulip buttons are intact, and these tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. Other distinctive '70s Gibson features include the headstock volute and "Made in USA" stamp. All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and CTS pots that date to the 30th week of 1972. The pickups are identical to the mini humbuckers used on Les Pauls of the era, with clean patent stickers on the baseplates and rare black plastic pickup covers and rings. The stock hardware is all original as well, including a quad of black speed knobs, a "harmonica" bridge, and the Gibson-branded Bigsby vibrato, which works great for quick warbles and modest dives. The bridge sits flush with the body as with virtually all SGs of this era, given the shallower neck angle used, and the action remains low and comfortable.Cosmetically, this is a well loved SG, with a 100% original walnut nitro lacquer finish. There is light horizontal lacquer checking on the body, as well as some faint scratches in the pick path and buckle rash on the back, which is prominent, but does not go through the finish. There are some light nicks and small marks of honest wear on the instrument as a whole as well, but no serious or structural wear of any kind!
A padded Gibson gigbag is included.
