This is a Teuffel Birdfish guitar from approximately 1998, serial number 65.There is a lot written about these guitars, and their maker, Ulrich Teuffel, so I won't repeat their history, his profile and the countless accolades.Make no mistake, this is an incredible player besides being a work of art and an icon of late 20th century design that will go down in history well beyond the guitar world.Just a short description and basic information for those of you who may be new to the Birdfish:It's a headless design with levers anchoring the string at the end of the neck and tuners at the "body". Most all the parts of the guitar are handmade by Mr. Teuffel, and you can most clearly see it in these little levers which have a crafty feel. They were the biggest revelation for me the first time I met one of these in person. The two bars on top of the guitar are resonators or tone bars, much like the body wings on a neck through guitar. For this Birdfish, I believe the blue are swamp ash and the red are maple. You can swap them out for different tone. (At some point I'd like to hear the sound with mahogany bars.)It comes with 5 pickups: 3 humbucker and 2 single coil that you can mix and match. The attach to a center metal bar with screws and can slide to any position. You can change position, height and angle as you wish. The pickups are voiced each slightly differently, left and right wound single coils, PAFish, P90ish and hot buckers. The switch is a typical 5 position lever with master volume and tone. You can order a MIDI upgrade for the guitar. The variety of tone is astonishing from twangy to rock to bluesy to jazzy and even metal. Some of the variation is evident in the youtube video in the listing from the Montreal guitar show: lVw1kjhcA34 ; look at some others like this Metallic Rome concert: Lgnzs8hCUnQ ; or this one where the demonstrator shows some of the variation in pickup positioning: Pem1dptdZFYAnother astonishing touch is the way the leg rest of the guitar functions as a handle for the gig bag when you zip it up. Truly integrated thinking from a great design mind. And let me say none of these clever features feels gimmicky or light hearted. The entire conception is purposeful and oriented toward the demanding musician. The condition of this Birdfish is excellent with very little wear. There are two light stains on the back of the gig bag and some light stains inside on the soft white cotton lining. There is a small chip in one of the red tone bars (see photo) that we left open for original authenticity. The frets are in good shape and their is little wear elsewhere on the guitar. It's not a closet queen, but it's in as good shape as I've seen for a two decade old guitar that has been played. Original enclosed letter and Teuffel stickers included.
