Up for sale, a 1976 Gibson Firebird V Bicentennial model in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. The first and arguably most faithful reissue of the original reverse body Firebird design, this Bicentennial model is a particularly clean example that is structurally sound with zero cracks! Few things are as unmistakably cool as a good Firebird V, and this particular iteration is the most popular and enduring with a classic two-tone nitro lacquer sunburst finish and a pair of original Firebird pickups that are true to vintage spec, measuring 6.09k ohms in the bridge position and 6.11k at the neck. The tone is rich and full, with the resonance and near endless sustain of the neck through mahogany construction. The pickups are particularly detailed and clear sounding, with chiming top end, a smooth midrange, and focused, sinewy bass response that pairs well with drive pedals and vintage tube amps. Weighing in at 8lbs 2oz and not *too* neck heavy for a Firebird, this Gibson has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in with low action and solid intonation. The mahogany neck has a fairly slender C profile that gains a bit more roundness and depth as you move up the fretboard, playing effortlessly with easy access to the highest frets. The stock frets are in great shape, and are of the wide/flat variety used by Gibson in the '70s. These frets play cleanly up the neck, only showing light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4, with no notable wear further up the board. The bound rosewood fretboard has pearloid trapezoid inlays on the 24 3/4" scale, and the nut is a full 1 11/16" in width. The headstock sports the original set of gold banjo tuners, which work as they should, hold pitch well, and are no longer available on modern Gibson Firebird models! On the body, all of the electronics are stock, with original patent number stamped Firebird pickups and CTS pots that date to '76. While the neck pickup retains its original windings, the bridge pickup has been professionally rewound in the past, and beneath the gold pickup surround, there is an extra set of tiny mounting holes to align the pickup more uniformly with the neck pickup than the factory mounting. The gold pickup surrounds, pickup covers, banjo tuners, and tailpiece show notable patina, and while the original gold Nashville bridge is included in the case, a modern Gibson Nashville bridge has been installed, given that recutting the saddle slots yielded the best setup and string spacing. Other stock parts include the gold reflector cap knobs and red, white, and blue Firebird logo on the original pickguard.
Cosmetically, this guitar has been honestly played but is actually quite remarkable in terms of condition, with a vibrant and unfaded two-tone nitro lacquer sunburst finish. The finish has no touchups or overspray, and it's worth restating that this guitar has *zero* cracks. There is light buckle rash down the central third of the body on the back and light wear in the pick path as well. The edges of the body are very clean, with only a stray nick or two on the headstock edges and near the rear strap button. This Firebird V is a great way to tap into vintage Gibson tones, and this original Bicentennial example is dialed in with fresh strings and low action. The original brown hardshell case with plush pink interior is included.
