Up for sale, a 2016 Patriarch Guitars "The Bard" archtop ukulele, brand new and complete with a Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup system. One of a select few instruments hand crafted each year by luthier Adam Hanson, founder of Patriarch Guitars, the Bard has a unique 18 1/4" scale that sits between a tenor and a baritone, with a rich, detailed, and rewarding tone. The body is constructed of solid African mahogany, with an X braced top, Bolivian Rosewood binding, and Zebrawood accents on the headstock overlay, floating tailpiece, and fingerboard. This combination of tone woods and construction methods yields a sound that has a bit of the midrange forward chop of an archtop, with a tone that projects nicely while still being very sweet and musical. There's an inherent warmth to the mahogany body, which is refined with the top end attack of the floating ebony bridge, and further accentuated by the clarity and balance of the Zebrawood. Strung and tuned like a baritone uke, The Bard is strung with fresh strings and is simply a joy to play. The neck profile has surprising girth and roundness, with generous shoulders and a substantial, solid feel. It's still very easy to chord deftly on this instrument, and the frets also have a bit more width than the slender bar frets used on many traditional ukuleles. The Zebrawood fretboard is inlayed with abalone dots, and the matching Zebrawood headstock overlay has a high gloss nitro lacquer finish that highlights the deep chocolate and gold stripes in this tonewood. A set of Grover tuning machines ensure accurate tuning and a smooth, reliable gear ratio. The body is expertly carved using all solid woods, with an arched top and back. The lower bout measures a full 10" in width, while the upper bout is a more slender 7 1/4". With Volume and Tone thumbwheels located inside the bass side edge of the soundhole, the Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup adds another dimension to the sound, faithfully replicating the acoustic tonalities of the instrument with great detail and nuance. A 1/4" endpin jack also anchors the floating Zebrawood tailpiece. Patriarch's work is set apart by some very fine and player-friendly touches, and the Bolivian rosewood binding that frames the top and back of this uke is a prime example of this attention to detail. A wider carved rosewood section along the bass side lower bout is the perfect armrest, which also highlights a particularly nice piece of rosewood. The Bard is finished completely in high gloss nitro lacquer, and this finish is even, smooth, and expertly applied. Since this instrument is technically a sales sample (and priced as such), there are a couple tiny nicks on the upper bout on the back, but no other wear to report.A gigbag is included.
