The G&L Legacy HSS is G&L's take on the versatile and popular HSS pickup combination. It's the perfect guitar for those who like vintage single coil tones but also need a guitar that can really rock out. With its five-position switch and tapped G&L humbucker, this guitar is an awesome blues and funk machine with a modern edge.

The Legacy HSS runs with this concept and adds G&L quality plus their own unique design touches. The G&L flat pole Alnico neck and middle pickups are wound to characterize the early 60's era pickups, and have a resistance in the low 6K range. Not as glassy and quacky as 50's era pickups, but they do have more midrange content that is very pedal-friendly. With a warmer midrange, but still clean and sweet on the high end, they sit sonically between the brighter vintage pickups and the hotter "Texas" style single coils that tend to lose essential Strat® character in the quest for output. As of July 2015, the standard bridge pickup in the Legacy HSS is a G&L-made AW4470B Alnico Humbucker. It's name is a code for it's build, telling you it is wound with an Alnico magnets using 7000 turns of 44 gage wire. The thinner 44 gage allows for more turns on the bobbin to achieve more output. This pickup is very similar in construction and characteristics to the Seymour Duncan JB (TB-4) which is still available as an option. Compared to the Seymour Duncan TB-4 Trembucker the G&L AW4470B has a bit more midrange warmth and is not quite as sharp on the high end. When tested with our Love Pedal Kalamazoo overdrive, it's crunchy and harmonically packed with a tight low end, a touch of upper midrange snarl that's aggressive without being tiresome. It's on the money for classic rock and higher gain styles of music. When played clean, the slightly dark midrange emphasis does come through, but with G&L's passive bass control it is possible to roll off the lows and lean out the humbucker. This is a very handy feature, and allows the ability to dial in the pickup anywhere from thick and punchy to clean and edgy. The is also the option to split the humbucker using the mini-toggle. The split humbucker is a perfectly legitimate single coil sound, with plenty of twang and sparkle. It's good for clean jangly rhythm or getting that iconic blues combination with the middle pickup. Even in split mode it's got more overall meat than your typical Strat pickup. The passive bass and treble controls work well with the single coil pickups too. Being able to roll off both top and bottom end is quite useful. For example: If you like to play aggressive rhythm or funk, taking a little low end out of the neck pickup gives a much more controlled articulate sound with less boom. Slick. The new standard Modern Classic neck is another recent change for the Legacy lineup. Similar to their 'Slim C' profile, but with a 1-11/16" nut width that maintains the same string spacing at their previous 1-5/8" nut. This creates more room on the sides of the fretboard, alleviating any worry about string roll-off. The new radius is a bit rounder as well, changing from 12" to 9.5". We don't notice a huge difference in the way single notes feel but doing chord work high up the neck is noticeably more comfortable. The thinner taper contributes to the comfort as well, measuring approximately .820 at the first fret and .870 at the twelfth. People with really large hands might enjoy the more full bodied taper of the 'Classic C', but the 'Modern classic' is a user friendly shape reminiscent of traditional Fender® USA necks. Standard Plek® fret finishing ensures consistent playability everywhere on the neck and like all G&L's, there is a build sheet showing exactly who built, set up and inspected the guitar. The HSS combination is popular for a very good reason: It satisfies the purist's desire for classic single coil spank and the modern rocker's instincts for something more meaty and aggressive. The G&L Legacy HSS combines all that with the workmanship and quality hardware that is unmatched at this price point.
