Up for sale, a 2015 Patriarch Guitars "The Knight" semi-hollowbody electric guitar, hand-crafted in the USA out of solid, carved tone woods. One of the select few instruments made each year by luthier Adam Hanson, founder of Patriarch Guitars, this prototype model is the first of its kind, and as visually alluring as it is sonically impressive. In spirit, The Knight owes much to both the Starcaster and ES-339 in terms of the body size and overall feel of the instrument as it sits on your body, but in terms of construction techniques, this instrument has more in common with a vintage archtop, and is purposefully designed to be tonally nuanced and impressive both acoustically and plugged in.Whereas most semi-hollowbody electric guitars utilize laminated woods, The Knight boasts a solid, hand-carved maple top, with a one-piece African mahogany body that has been hollowed out and fitted with a center block, measuring 14 1/2" across the lower bout, and 10 1/4" at the widest point on the upper bout, given the offset body horns. At a slender 2 1/4" in depth, the instrument has a very comfortable and manageable size, delivering an acoustic presence that takes full advantage of both the warmth and fundamental richness of mahogany, as well as the articulation and top end snap of maple. There's a slight midrange forward presence and an undeniable note clarity due to the carved top, and the frequency response and harmonic complexity this guitar boasts when plugged in will delight demanding players from a wide range of genres. The pickups are a pair of Seymour Duncans, with a Jazz humbucker in the neck position, and a 59 PAF clone in the bridge position. The Jazz is an excellent vintage output all-purpose humbucker, built with alnico V magnets and delivering glassy top end, bass frequencies that are full and focused, and a scooped midrange that retains clarity even at high gain. The 59 Duncan in the bridge position also has alnico V magnets at its heart, is vacuum wax potted and will deliver the classic PAF complexity and harmonic clarity with a bit more compression. The five-piece neck is constructed mainly of African mahogany, with two strips of flame maple down the center bisected by a sliver of walnut. In terms of profile shape, this neck is on the more slender side of things with a C shape that has consistent depth as you move up the fretboard and just enough roundness in the shoulders to feel both substantial and fast. The bound rosewood fretboard features vintage-style fretwire and contrasting mother of pearl and ivory plastic trapezoids that add subtle dimension to the board while still being understated. The scale length is a full 25" and the nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the guitar has been fitted with a set of Kluson-style Gibson Deluxe tuning gears which turn very smoothly and ensure tuning stability. The Patriarch "H" is inlayed as well, noting the last name initial of the builder. The controls on the body are intuitive and straightforward, with Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup coupled to a three-way pickup selector toggle conveniently located well outside of the pick path. Only top quality components were used in the harness, including push-back cloth wire, Switchcraft switch and jack, and full size CTS pots. A chrome Tune-o-Matic bridge and stopbar round things out, and the cream plastic parts really pop against the nitro lacquer '50s recipe goldtop finish. As both a prototype and a demo model, there are a few extremely tiny finish scratches and pinhead sized nicks on the back of the guitar, but this instrument is essentially new and free of the play wear seen on a used instrument.Every dimension of this Patriarch Guitars instrument is purposefully and expertly executed, resulting in a guitar that feels particularly soulful, resonant, and lively. This prototype of The Knight is offered at an introductory price well below the eventual MSRP of this model, and comes complete with a well padded gigbag.Specifications:
