The G&L Legacy HSS RMC is G&L's take on the familiar HSS pickup combination but Rear Mounted Controls. The result is a gorgeous display of the guitar's top, which in this case is a cut of the exotic Black Limba. It's the perfect guitar for those who like vintage single coil tones but also need a guitar that can really rock out. With its five-position switch and tapped G&L humbucker, this guitar is an awesome blues and funk machine with an edge for modern music.

With the warm Honeyburst finish and deep streaks in the Black Limba Top, you get an eye-catching guitar that takes on many different hues under the lights. Black Limba is a variation of 'Dark Korina' which comes from the Mahogany family, so it is quite an interesting addition to the Legacy. Tonally it nicely complements the swamp ash body, and the warmer more midrange-focused nature of Limba balances well with the naturally bright tone of the single coil pickups. The RMC (Rear Mounted Controls) is not totally new at G&L and this model replaces the old Legacy Deluxe. The S-Type guitar never goes out of style, but G&L is not one to let tradition hold them back. Freeing the guitar from a pickguard lets the finish and woodgrain take center stage and the lack of plastic gives it a sleek, classy look. This is our first RMC in the shop, and it was an impulse triggered by the availability of Black Limba. Not only does it look amazing but it has real tone benefits. The G&L flat-pole Alnico neck and middle pickups are wound to characterize the early 60's era pickups and have a resistance in the low 6K range. They are characterized by a strong percussive low end, a mild midrange scoop and a high end that is clean but not glassy to the point of being shrill. They are on the mark for classic Strat® tones but also have enough midrange output to drive pedals for smoky blues or roots rock. Through our Dr. Z Remedy Head and 4x10" Mojotone cabinet they are classic single coil, and the Limba top adds a slightly softer, rounder edge that makes them soulful and expressive. As of last year, G&L made their AW4470 pickup the standard bridge humbucker in most G&L guitars. It's name is code for it's build; telling you it is wound with an Alnico magnet using 7000 turns of 44 gage wire. In terms of construction and voicing, it is very similar to the Seymour Duncan JB, which has been the iconic hot humbucker for many years. The sound is tight, with a strong upper midrange presence, and a percussive low end attack. From our guess it's probably Alnico 5, but G&L does not specify. This pickup is not over-the-top hot, but it's solid midrange content works wonders with pedals, creating tight harmonically packed crunch that is tonally on the mark for Classic Rock, heavy blues and harder styles of music. The ability to split the humbucker creates a perfectly legitimate single coil pickup with plenty of twang and sparkle. It's good for clean jangly rhythm or mixing with the middle pickup. It also bears mentioning that the G&L passive treble and bass controls have great tone shaping capability, especially as applied to the bridge pickup. The ability to roll off both bass and treble response is a unique feature, and rolling low end off the humbucker not only changes its clean tone, but also how it drives pedals. Effect pedals -- especially distortion -- are very midrange sensitive, and the passive bass and treble controls provide a lot of flexibility. The new standard Modern Classic neck is another recent change for the Legacy lineup. Somewhat of a take-off on their 'Slim C' profile, the modern classic feels familiar, and similar to a traditional USA Fender® neck. The nut is a little wider at 1 11/16" but maintains the 1 5/8" string spacing. This creates more room on the sides of the fretboard, alleviating any concern of string roll-off. The new radius is a bit rounder as well, changing from 12" to 9.5". We don't notice a huge difference in the way single notes feel but doing chord work high up the neck is noticeably more comfortable. The thinner taper contributes to the comfort as well, measuring approximately .820 at the first fret and .870 at the twelfth. Players with big hands might enjoy the more full bodied taper of the 'Classic C', but the 'Modern Classic' is a-user friendly shape that has turned out to be very popular. Standard Plek® fret finishing ensures consistent playability everywhere on the neck, and like all G&L's there is a build sheet showing exactly who built, set up and inspected the guitar. The HSS combination is popular for a very good reason: It satisfies the purist's desire for classic single coil spank and the modern rocker's instincts for something more meaty and aggressive. Combine all this with a sleek Limba top, and you have a showcase instrument with G&L quality, and uncommon flexibility.
