| |Up for sale, a 1958 Fender Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This classic Pre-CBS bass is a prime example of Fender's golden era and tonally stands up to the reverence given to the earliest Fender P's for their deep, focused thump and ability to sit perfectly in a mix while still being present and round sounding. Currently strung with roundwound 45-100 strings with an arrow straight neck, the tone has great articulation and a touch of growl in the treble frequencies when you dig in, and notes have a bloom and fullness that is simply delightful. For any Motown aficionado, this bass delivers all of the Jamerson and Funk Brothers goodness, with a dynamic quality on the attack of the note that you can feel through your body as the entire bass resonates. At 8lbs 14oz, this is a medium weight and very well balanced bass, giving the illusion that its actually a few ounces lighter because of how well it sits on a strap. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this 1958 Fender Precision lives up to its "holy grail" bass status, with solid intonation, jaw-dropping tone and a feel that no modern bass or reissue can match. While the neck retains its original finish, the body has been professionally refinished in nitro lacquer by Riggio Custom Guitars, and the exceptional quality of the three-tone burst will satisfy the most discerning collectors. The three-tone sunburst finish has the perfect fade from yellow to a vibrant ring of red, to a deep blackish brown on the edges of the body. All of the original contours were faithfully maintained, and the finish has an authentic, lightly weathered look, with fine finish checking in the lacquer that looks natural and applied by true age. As such, the body wear perfectly matches the patina and checking of the original nitro lacquer finish on the neck and headstock. The one-piece maple neck has a very nicely rounded medium C shaped profile, and the fretboard edges are perfectly rolled for a very comfortable playing experience. The profile does grow modestly in depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, and the smooth gloss nitro finish feels great on the palm. Over the decades, this bass has been played with a fairly light touch, with very clean original frets and minimal wear through the original gloss lacquer on the maple fretboard. Likely strung with flatwounds for most of its life, the frets retain virtually all of their original height, with only faint wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-6, and no notable wear further up the neck. The fret tangs are clean and well seated in their original grooves, and we are fully confident in the originality of these frets.Highlights & Notable Features:
On the headstock, the waterslide Fender decal is a clean replacement, with unfaded silver in the "Fender" font, and bold black letters for "Precision Bass." The original reverse tuning machines turn extremely smoothly and hold pitch well with chrome plating that only shows light patina on the tulip buttons. Very common for this era of Fender production, there is a slender crack extending from both sides of the low E tuner post which has been professionally repaired. The heel of the neck retains the original 7-58 pencil date, and the face of the headstock does have light clear nitro lacquer overspray. All of the electronics work as they should, and the split coil pickup was made to exacting vintage specifications by Sonny's Custom Shop, our preferred shop for vintage pickup restoration. This pickup has the correct "High A" alnico pole pieces and uses the same wire and black bobbin flatwork as the original. The end result is a pickup that truly sounds as powerful, round, and nuanced as any Pre-CBS bass we've had in the shop. The wiring harness consists of the original Stackpole tone pot which dates back to the 48th week of '57, and a newer volume pot. Beneath the shielding plate, the original body date is present and reads 4/58 and the original body routes are unaltered. The stock bridge, knurled metal knobs, and original chrome neck plate are present as well. Regarding the anodized gold pickguard, it is original to the bass and has just been professionally restored by Tone-Guard, the industry experts on vintage anodized Fender gold pickguards. The result perfectly matches the original grain and shade of gold on the guard.Aside from the aforementioned body-only refinish and subsequent tasteful relic work to match the condition to the original neck finish, the wear on the instrument is fairly minor. There is prominent lacquer checking across the neck and headstock, along with a few tiny nicks that don't affect playability in the slightest. Overall, this is an impressive, complete, and well cared for vintage Fender Precision Bass. The original tweed "knucklebuster" hardshell case is included with original working latches, stock handle, gold interior, and most of the original brown leather present on the case ends.
