Summary:During the late 70s, Ibanez produced a series of extraordinarily well-built guitars from master craftsmen. Breaking away from the copies they’d focused on previously, the Artist series saw Ibanez’s design and build mentality come into its own. This Artist 2617, which suggests a Les Paul and an SG while departing radically from both,
is a superb example of the artistry coming out of the Ibanez factory during what was arguably the company’s golden era. Body: Solid ash (sen) double cutaway. Bound two-piece book-matched top with German carve and abalone purfling. Natural finish. Neck:
Three-piece rock maple set neck with smooth contoured heel. Bound ebony fretboard with Mother of Pearl/Abalone inlays. Brass/ bone nut.            Pickups/Hardware: Two Ibanez Super 80 humbuckers with engraved “Flying Fingers” on gold covers. Individual volume and tone controls.
Three-position pickup selector. Gold-plated hardware. Ibanez Gibraltar slotted tailpiece and locking bridge with sustain block. Ibanez Velve-Tune double worm gear machines with pearl buttons. Cosmetics: Decked out in gold and pearl with a figured ash top, this is one pretty guitar. It is in good condition for its age, with only minor finish dings and scratches. There is a finish blemish on the treble side headstock tip.
The gold hardware is lightly tarnished, but shows very little pitting. Frets are big and full. Playability:
With a carve similar to a Gibson 60s taper and jumbo frets, the neck plays fast and smooth.
Action is low with no buzz or dead spots. The contoured heel and double cutaways provide easy upper fret access.
The coveted “Flying Finger” Super 80s are hot, but with plenty of clarity and depth. Weight: 10 lbs, 4 oz. Case:
Non-original hardshell.***
