We’ve said it time and time again, these “The” Paul and SGs are the best bang for your buck. They have all of the electronics that the higher end customs had back in the day, but cost considerably less. Not only that, but they play so nicely too! Sure they might not be quite as pretty as their higher end counterparts, but these make the perfect road warrior guitar! These guitars were first introduced as student, entry level models, but they have gathered quite the following over the years. These are getting tough to find for a reasonable price in all original condition. The Deluxe models are even nicer! With some fancier appoints such as special finishes, but most importantly being constructed completely out of Mahogany – the vintage correct wood, instead of Walnut. The Case… This baby comes with an aftermarket hard-shell case of great quality. This isn’t your cheap discount case, it is very similar to the school age kids hard-shell orchestra cases – built to be thrown around. The case is a very good fit with only minor “wiggle room.” It even has 6 latches on it! While it might not be original to the guitar, it is great for the gigging musician as it doesn’t say, “Steal Me” and it protects the guitar well. The Guitar! Ol’ Goldy here is all-original minus the tuners and strap buttons. That means a beautiful ebony fretboard, all mahogany construction with Tim Shaw pickups. This one is unique in the sense that the bridge pickup features a date stamp like a ttop, but all other Shaw characteristics so it is a cool transitional Ttop/Shaw. The neck pickup has the traditional shaw stamp. This one is also a rare factory Goldburst finish. This guitar has been played a lot and has lots of bumps and bruises to show for it. If you’re looking for a well-played guitar that is ready to join your arsenal, this is your guitar! There are wear to the corners of the headstock and scratching and indentions to the face and sides of the headstock. There is moderate fretware, but the guitar plays fine right now, but could use a dressing in a few years. There is lots of scratching to the front of the guitar and many light dings in the body. This is especially apparent in the traditional area for the toggle switch. The two body seam lines are showing – these are not cracks or repairs and are quite common to see. There is a crack in the neck pickup ring by the treble side screw/spring. This does not affect the guitar but is important to note. There was a finish touch up to the side of the neck where the finish was played off. The wood appears to have been stained black and is a fairly good match. The finish in the area looks like it is chipping/sharp, but we’ve picked at it and it is not going to chip off nor can you feel it while playing. There are also some light dings in the neck that you might feel while playing – though we did not.Lastly, there is significant non-finish breaking buckle wear on the back of the guitar when viewed in the light. Conclusion Overall, this is a fantastic guitar that sounds and plays excellent. It is a rare and desirable finish and its in players shape so it keeps the price down. If you’re looking for the ultimate vintage player on a budget – this is your guitar!
