1977 Ibanez 2471 Archtop Electric Guitar

This is a great example of a lawsuit era Ibanez that was made to Gibson L5 Premier specs by master luthier M. Tamura. Many consider him to be the father of Japanese archtop lutherie and the legend is that he apprenticed under John D'Angelico himself. He is also said to be the mentor of master luthier M. Sugihara who is well known for his work on Japanese archtop guitars. The fit and finish of this guitar shows the mastery of the art one would expect from someone with such credentials. This guitar has a full size 17 inch body with a solid carved spruce top and a solid maple back. The top has parallel bracing like an L5 and is a fully acoustic archtop with no holes other than the f holes in the top like an L5 Premier. The binding has some yellowing, the worst of which can be seen in the pics. There is no separation of cracking in the binding though. The bridge is the all ebony original which is very similar to that used on Gibson Johnny Smith guitars, also having inlays identical to those found on Gibsons. The neck is made of three ply maple with an ebony fretboard and mother of pearl inlays. The neck profile feels like a 50s Gibson neck, giving a smooth fast feel. The frets have end binding, just like Gibsons. The frets have some wear, but all notes ring out clearly with a low set action and there is still a lot of life left in these original frets. The tuners are original and function wonderfully, holding tuning perfectly. The finish is in good shape. There are a few scattered small dents and dings, as would be expected in a guitar that is almost 40 years old and has seen some playing time. There are no cracks in the top. The only cracks I see are some small cracks around the jack hole which can be seen in the photos. The neck joint is solid, properly angled, and has no evidence of a reset. The electronics appear to be all original, including the wiring, pots, jack, and floating pickup. All function correctly and the pots are smooth and quiet. The tone is reminiscent of and compares very favorably to that on my 1968 Gibson Johnny Smith, very round and smooth with just the right amount of depth and brightness.
