I have also heard that Trevor Rabin of YES had one of these guitars. These guitars were made entirely by Arndt on CNC equipment, including the radius fingerboard and fret slots, which according to him were machined with a tolerance of 0.0005” (five ten-thousandths). This accuracy has paid off, as it is the most accurate guitar I own – every note hits the projected note with incredible accuracy. (Arndt once told me that NASA was outsourcing to him to CNC some parts for them.)Details: AZ31B Magnesium neck, AZ31B magnesium headstock and 6061 Aluminum body. The neck is solid and one-piece (no separate fingerboard) – this is also why the guitar is so accurate. The body is machined from a 5/8” thick plate, and the back side has a large-radius fillet around the outside edge. The back cover is machined from Delrin. The neck is about 3/4" thick, and the back is a flattened C-shaped profile. Fret wire is Dunlop nickel. Gibson humbucker pickups. There is one volume and one tone control, as well as a 4-way rotary switch for different pickup configurations: Neck position, Bridge position, Both in series, Both in parallel. The neck, body and headstock are chrome plated. Very few shops can accomplish high quality chrome plating of aluminum, and even fewer have the expertise to chrome plate magnesium. The plating on this guitar is gorgeous and has stood up flawlessly over the past 20 years. These finishes are much easier to maintain than the polished bare metal finishes common on other metal guitars.
I have owned and played many metal guitars: Travis Beans, Kramers, EGCs. However, this was the first guitar I played with a solid metal neck/fingerboard. It has superior resonance and sustain, compared to the multi-piece composite necks on Beans and Kramers. I had thought that the 0.0005” tolerance figure was overkill, but you will feel and hear a difference! Because of the high tolerance and extremely straight neck, you can adjust the action quite low without encountering dead spots (buzzing) from frets that are slightly pronounced (as you tend to encounter with normal guitars.) Distorted, the guitar screams. With the volume pulled back, it can almost sound like a piano – a truly unique sounding guitar. Visually, this guitar is stunning, and unlike anything else. The chrome-plated flat surfaces are as reflective as mirrors. This guitar is in exactly the same condition as when I purchased it from Arndt – in like-new condition.Arndt’s guitars were partly inspired by Veleno guitars. (He mentioned that John Veleno had complemented him on his guitars.) However, despite his superior product, Arndt was not a marketer. As a result, these guitars are extremely obscure (I have never seen another one of these.) This may be your only chance to obtain one.Today, you may find a handful of manufacturers selling all-metal guitars, but you will NOT find anybody offering a magnesium guitar. Magnesium is difficult to machine – very few have the resources or know-how.
