Abletons Push 2 builds upon the hugely successful original push controller, making the integration between hardware and software seamless, eliminating the instances for using a mouse and keyboard to the point you could create a track without ever looking at a computer. This is improved in no small part by the inclusion of a full colour screen that’s viewable in almost any position, further removing the need for looking up at a computer screen in the studio and having a laptop open on-stage when performing live. The Push 2 boasts 64 back-lit velocity sensitive pads, which have a fantastically responsive feel for playing beats or notes and can transform itself to various input modes, giving excellent visual feedback through its bright colour interface. This is perfect for creating arrangements, clip-launching and mixing. The vivid full colour screen located at the top of the Live controller adapts itself to whichever mode you are in, displaying essential information that can be seen in any environment without glare and at almost any angle. It also aids the brand new sampling workflow added to Live 9.5 and Push 2. A full waveform representation is given that can be sliced, re-arranged and manipulated right in front of you, rather than on an attached computer screen. This utilizes the eight touch sensitive encoders that run parallel to the screen, as well as the improved peripheral control that surrounds the 64 pad grid. Ableton Push 2 delivers simple and intuitive control over melodic and harmonic musical sections, along with beat-making and song structures, all with the mind set of quickly crafting individual ideas and creating songs, with the ability to dive into the complexity and detail of each element when needed. The ingenious scale mode eliminates the opportunity to play incorrect notes when jamming and performing, whilst you can create chords in different scales using the same chord shape on the grid (a huge plus for the non-musically trained). The familiar 16 pad step sequencer is displayed on the bottom left quadrant of the pads and re-ignites a familiar groovebox/drum machine workflow, with the added bonus of using the peripheral buttons and encoders to alter and edit the sounds and kits that you are using. The Push 2, which has been purposely designed for Ableton Live 9.5 and comes with a copy of Live 9.5 Intro, can easily be upgraded to either Standard or Suite versions if desired. This synergy of purpose designed hardware and software opens up the myriad of options for productions and track creation for all current Ableton users, as well as complete newcomers, and actually allows us to get closer to exploiting and utilizing the full potential of this cult piece of music software.
