This is a 1966 (serial number 226340) Reynolds Contempora Double French Horn. This instrument was originally built as a direct rival to the Elkhart Conn 8Ds of the period, and it plays very well. These horns play similarly to Conn 8Ds since they are both Kruspe wrap instruments, though the Reynolds has a slightly different tone and responsiveness. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are some small pings, as well as scratching and etching throughout the instrument. There is also a small collar on the leadpipe. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn has had the old lacquer removed to improve its tone, as well as for aesthetics. Therefore, this horn is finished in pure brass, and may have to be polished every few months, if played often. Fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to be shiny; if the fingerprints are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely satin patina.
