This is a vintage (serial number 319614) Holton H-77 "Farkas" Double French Horn. This instrument was the original model of horn developed and designed by Philip Farkas, is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with like-new compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton model 77 was built using yellow brass, and later the design was altered to make the horn a bit bigger and the material was changed to nickel silver to make the horn a more direct competitor to the Conn 8D; this new model was the Holton 179. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few very small pings throughout the horn, as well as some light, isolated scratching in the lacquer and few small spots of missing lacquerThere are two small patches in the inner wrap, and a few scars in the lacquer. Overall the lacquer is in very good condition, with more than 95% of it still in very good shape. The engraving on the bell reads “FRANK HOLTON & CO./ ELKHORN, WIS./ U.S.A”. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This instrument comes with a hardshell briefcase style case, and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays:  Full, warm, and rich sound. The tone is dark and smooth. The horn is very responsive and free-blowing as well as resonant. The Bb and F side timbres match well. The horn has a very good dynamic range, capable of a strong, edgy fortissimo without blatting and a soft, full pianissimo without breaking up. The horn’s high and low registers speak very well and are comfortable to play in.
