1960 Rickenbacker 335 Capri Semi-Hollowbody 6-String Guitar w/Original Kaufmann Vibrola UnitThis is an EXCELLENT TO NEAR MINT CONDITION Rickenbacker Capri 335 in original fireglow finish, which is deep, rich, and unfaded.  This guitar is a typical "under the bed" guitar that did not see much playing.  This is the thicker body model originally produced in 1958 and eventually replaced by the thinner body version in 1961. With the exception of the Kaufmann vibrola arm, it is all original.  The serial number is 2V029.  Here is a breakdown of the guitar's condition, please refer to pictures:Body:  The guitar shows no playing wear on the body.  The finish is in original NEAR MINT condition.  There is finish wear along the edges of the guitar from the case, and there are finish and stress cracks on the edges of the back, probably from shrinkage and relaxation of the back wood over the years. This is due to the fact that the back is a maple wood laminate that is glued to the routed-out bookmatched maple front.  Hence, they shrink at different rates.  However, there is no wood seam separation.  There is finish wear along the edges of the guitar from the case. The finish is super-thin and in some areas there have been minor flakes that came off over the years as you can see in the photos.  There is also a paint chip missing under the Kaufmann vibrola where the arm contacts the body, presumably from vibrola use.Neck:  The neck is flamey and has the original fretboard finish which shows no cracking or wear. Frets are original and show no wear. The neck does have case wear on one edge near the fretboard, and this wear area was oversprayed with clear nitro prior to my purchase, presumably to protect the wood. No other overspray on the neck. There is a light lacquer check running from the nut to the middle laminate strip of the neck; it appears that there may be a hairline crack in the neck but I cannot see any wood separation.  I obtained the guitar with this feature and I've had this guitar for 17 yrs, strung with different gauge strings, and that stress region has not progressed, so it appears stable, particularly since it deadends into the walnut laminate.  I've had luthiers look at it and their opinion is to leave it alone, just be careful with the guitar.  My guess is that at some point prior to my purchase the guitar was in its case and the case may have fallen over, inducing a stress point in the wood of the neck. Makes sense, since there is case wear in the same region.  There is also some other kind of minor dent on the other side of the neck.  There is no headstock fracture, the neck action is straight and low and very easy to play. No evidence or need of a neck reset with this guitar.  Depending on your playing preferences you might want to adjust the truss rod when you receive the guitar; as shown in the photos the action is set low and there is plenty of room to lower the bridge even more. This is a single truss rod model, prior to the introduction of the 2 truss rod system that was introduced in 1961.
Plastics, Hardware, and electronics:  The gold-backed lucite pickguard has a small stress crack near the toggle switch and the pickups, pots and wiring are 100% original and unmolested.  Knobs and pickup selector switch are original bakelite or phenolic plastic with no cracks. Guitar has original pickups, rubber grommets, strap buttons. and roller bridge with hex adjustment screws and base and there is no corrosion on these.  The pickup screws appear to be replacements.  There is some loss of gold backspray on the truss rod cover. The original patent number Kaufmann vibrola works fine and so do the trussrods.  Tuners are original Klusons with some tarnish and work fine.  Note that the Kaufmann Vibrola arm is a repro and works fine with the vibrola unit.Original case is in excellent condition and latches work.
Not much else to say about this beauty, 1960 was near the end of the full body Capri / Kaufmann series and it is RARE to find this type of model in this wonderful condition with the original Kaufmann still installed.  Many of these were converted to Accent vibrolas.  Nice condition, Priced accordingly.
