Up for sale, a 2012 Fender Custom Shop '61 Relic Telecaster in exceptional, near mint condition and perfect working order. Representing a "best of both worlds", this Custom '61 Tele blends authentic, period correct visuals with modern, highly playable features such as a 9.5" fretboard radius and taller 6105 fretwire. Masterfully relic'd at Fender's Custom Shop, there is just enough simulated wear on the guitar to look broken in, as if it's been lovingly played for decades. Featherweight at 7lbs 6oz, this Tele has a resonant, articulate voice that translates through the pickups, with chimey top-end and a vocal lower midrange quality in the neck position, slightly scooped middle position, and plenty of vintage spank and snarl in the bridge position. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this guitar plays incredibly well with fresh 10-46 strings, low action, and solid intonation. The quartersawn maple neck has a quintessential medium C shaped profile, and the dark rosewood fretboard boasts clay dots and frets that are virtually unplayed. The guitar has no buzzing or dead spots on the fretboard, and the slightly increased height and crown of the fretwire (compared to vintage wire) lends itself to easier bending and longer fret life. The headstock features an era-correct Fender Telecaster logo, vintage style string tree on the B and E strings, and Kluson-style tuning machines which have been artfully aged. These tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well, while the back of the headstock sports a Custom Shop decal. The body features the aesthetic touches associated with the Tele Custom, boasting an era-correct three-tone Sunburst finish topped off with aged white binding and three-ply mint green pickguard. The Patent Pending ashtray bridge features three aluminum saddles that provide reliable intonation, as well as more top-end bite yet smoother upper midrange than a comparable brass saddle. All of the electronics work as they should, with a three-way pickup selector and volume and tone knobs wired to a set of Fender's Custom Shop Twisted Tele pickups. What's interesting about the Twisted Tele pickups is that the neck pickup utilizes a set of Alnico V magnets, and a taller bobbin is required to accommodate these rod magnets. This makes room for 42 gauge wire (instead of the usual 43 gauge) which allows Fender to use a "typical" amount of turns on the bobbin, providing a tone and output that is far closer to a Strat pickup, with more clarity across the tonal spectrum. All of the original Custom Shop markings are clear and intact on both the body and the neck. The body boasts the "Relic" stamps beneath the neck plate and on the face of the body under the pickguard, while the heel of the neck and neck pocket also have the same stamp along with the date of manufacture. The “R” prefix (denoting the Custom Shop Relic line) four-bolt neck plate is also present, and the back of the headstock has the "Custom Shop" decal to match.Cosmetically, this guitar has been extremely well cared for, with virtually no wear aside from the factory relic. The light, factory applied relic treatment on this instrument includes some prominent finish checking and a few small nicks on the body for character, but that's about it. It's a relic job that's true to how many Fenders actually age over the decades, and tastefully done so that the instrument will present well for players preferring a clean, vintage look. This is a near mint example of a desirable Fender Custom Shop instrument, issued in limited numbers and a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Fender's Custom Shop! The original brown tolex Fender case is included, along with the factory paperwork and unopened case candy. The COA was not presented to the original owner upon purchase, but a replacement can be acquired directly from Fender.
