We are proud to be a Les Paul Forum sponsor dealer.List Price: $13,689MAP Price: $9,699Built by Gibson Custom in Nashville Tennessee and endorsed by the Motor City Madman Theodore Anthony Nugent the big Byrd is sure to put you in a Stranglehold and smile on your face. It’s the weapon of choice for Ted and he has consistently used the big Byrd since forming the Amboy Dukes in 1964 and was featured on the front cover of Ted Nugent's first album in 1975, Ted only plays the florentine model. The Byrdland is truly a work of art taking well over a year to build by hand with no details overlooked plus its nice and light at only 7 pounds 4 ounces. This one was built by master luthier Doug Culbertson who superseded James Hutchins at Gibson Custom.
Originally built at the request of Billy Byrd and Hank Garland in 1955 the Byrd land was made with a reduced 23.5” scale length but featured all the appointments of a fine top-of-the-line Gibson arch top guitar. The Byrdland’s super-thin neck and 23 1/2” scale length might have implied a “student model” instrument, but it was intended purely for speed and playing ease, with its five-ply binding, ebony fingerboard with pearl block inlay, gold-plated hardware, and triple-loop Byrdland trapeze tailpiece all single it out as a top-shelf guitar that is very ornate. The Byrdland retained the traditional carved solid-spruce arched top and wide dimensions (17”) of big-bodied jazz box like its predecessor the L-5CES, but was considerably thinner, at only 2 1/4” deep.
Built by the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville TN. it offers the finest original-spec rendition of this classic model that has been available since its production of the late 1950s. From the select maple and walnut used in its neck to the high-grade spruce of its top, no expense is spared in making this thinline electric guitar that Hank Garland and Billy Byrd would be proud of. Details such as the pearl flower-pot headstock inlay, multi-ply fingerboard binding, Florentine cutaway, multi-ply bound pickguard, bound f-holes, and sculpted fingerboard end are all true to classic form. In the electrics department, a pair of Gibson’s popular ’57 Classic humbucking pickups keep it all sounding as good as it looks. This Byrdland is in as new mint unplayed condition with certificate of authenticity, all hang tags, factory paperwork and original shipping carton. Its still has the originial strings and factory set up on it.
