Up for auction is a vintage (serial number 397582) Conn 6D Double French Horn. This instrument is what is known as a "pre-letter" 6D, since there is no letter preceding the serial number. These horns were built in Conn's Elkhart factory, and are considered to be superior to any horns that were built later--Conn 6Ds built during the era when this horn was built were still being built as professional instruments, a lighter alternative to the Conn 8D. The horn is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are some small dings and pings and some isolated scratching and pitting throughout the instrument. The horn has been converted to a screw-bell configuration and the flare is a newer gold brass replacement. This is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The engraving reads "C.G. CONN LTD./ ELKHART-IND./ U.S.A.". This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a briefcase style screw bell case in good condition and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Full, warm and bright sound. The tone is smooth. The horn is fairly responsive. The Bb side timbre is a bit brighter than the F side. The low and high registers speak well, and the horn has a decent dynamic.
