Up for sale, a 1966 Kay K562 Speed Demon in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. An evolution of the earlier Speed Demon and Swingmaster models, the K562 was part of the "Concert Hall" series introduced in '66 and had a particularly short production run.
Finished in a transparent red nitro lacquer, this USA-made Kay boasts a pair of single coil pickups that have plenty of power and twang, with a slightly scooped midrange and surprisingly full low end. Acoustically, this guitar has a balanced, sweet voice that projects well and is a joy to play without amplification. The warmth of the full hollow construction translates well through the pickups, which each have a volume and tone knob. Select each pickup individually or turn on both and blend them together as you please! This guitar has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable, low action and a fresh set of 10-46 strings. The neck has a chunky round medium C profile that has just the right amount of depth to fill the palm comfortably. The 1 11/16" nut width will be familiar to traditional Gibson players, and the rosewood fretboard boasts the original vintage frets which are in excellent shape and have been leveled in the guitar's lifetime, currently showing no notable wear with plenty of life left. The neck is straight and the guitar plays well all the way to the last fret with no buzzing and an ideal neck angle. The headstock sports the classic Kay "blade" shape with original white silkscreened logo and open back tuning machines which work well and turn smoothly with their stock white plastic buttons. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should and all of the original hardware is intact. This includes the adjustable rosewood bridge, batwing pickguard and quartet of original knobs. The stock wiring is untouched, with original paper-in-oil tone caps and CTS pots that date to '66.  The transparent red finish is very reminiscent of Gibson's ES-335s of the late 1960s, with a slightly deeper version of what is commonly known as "tomato soup" red. In terms of cosmetic wear, there is very little to mention aside from some very minor finish scratching and a small chip in the nut beneath the low E string, which doesn't affect the stability or functionality of the nut in any way. Overall, this is an uncommonly clean and well kept vintage instrument that has likely lived most of its life under the bed!
