Presenting an incredibly rare pre-serial number lawsuit era GRECO Beatle Violin Bass from what I presume to be the mid-1970s. Vintage GRECO guitars and basses were made in Japan to an extremely high level of quality and to many represent the "Golden Era" of Japanese instruments with quality matching or exceeding the instruments that inspired them. This is the ONLY example of this bass that I have ever seen anywhere. It is simply amazing. I think GRECO had its sites set on showing Gibson that they could do anything Gibson could do and do it much better. The proportions, balance and detail of this bass are incredible. It features an ebony fret board with decorative fret inlays. A multi-layer binding throughout with an extensive use of abalone even on the neck pocket! Unheard of! Tortoise shell style control knob plate and pick guard. Gibson style inlayed headstock. Stunningly beautiful flamed maple book page back. Gorgeous tobacco sunburst finish. Three piece maple neck. Gold hardware. "GRECO" embossed pickup covers that are very similar to the "Ibanez" embossed pickup covers of the same era. Also includes a plush lined, hard shell base.This bass appears to have been played very, very little if at all. Given the overall detail and the obvious rarity it wouldn't surprise me if this was a presentation copy or prototype. GRECO is a brand that is generally available only overseas. This bass was privately imported from Japan many years ago but does have the corrosion typically seen on vintage gold hardware and metal components from Japan. Considering it's probably at least 40 years old I view it as character! The case is missing some of its lining in the area of the upper bout on the hinge side but otherwise is in great shape. One of the knobs is missing a plastic chrome cap. The tortoise pick guard was removed and over the years somehow got broken into three pieces but it's all there to be used as a template along with the original mounting hardware.A professional setup was performed several years ago with D'Addario XL Chromes .40 - .95 and has had maybe 30 minutes of play time since. It sounds really great to me but I'm not sure if the controls are 100% so keep that in mind. I'm a guitarist but bought this bass simply because it was the most beautiful stringed instruments I had ever seen.
