Description

In the summer of 1974 I was allowed in the stock room of Don Wehr’s Music City, at the corner of Columbus and Bay in San Francisco, to choose a new Strat.  I wanted a hardtail and I wanted to play/hear them without an amp before plugging in.  The natural finish was on sale at the time (probably why there are so many of them still around) and they let me open cases and play until I was happy and choose ‘The One’.  And let me tell ya 40 plus years later, I picked a winner. This guitar weighs only 6 pounds, 11 ounces and is an absolute joy to play.  I’ve had several Strat players tell me it is the most comfortable and one of the best sounding Strats they’ve had the pleasure to play.  It has a maple neck and the frets are still in very good condition.  It has staggered pole pickups.  The body has the most gorgeous grain I’ve seen on one of these.  The guitar itself is almost like new – almost, it is 43 years old.  Even the latches on the original case work like new.  All original case candy is there, including the chrome bridge cover, initialed inspection tag, owner’s manual, keys to the case, 3 Allen wrenches and original polishing cloth!  I think the cable was original as well.     Not too long after buying it I fell in love with Gibson guitars and, well…  this beauty never got played that much.  On the advice of a working musician I had two small alterations made to the guitar around 1977 – ‘78 by a top guitar tech in Boulder, CO.  The original tuners were giving me some problems so I had them changed to Schaller’s.  However, I kept the original tuners (shown in the photos) and they are included in the case with the guitar.  At the same time, there was a popular 5-way switch mod to get the out of phase sounds that were all the rage (Garcia, Clapton) and I asked for that as well.  The mod was to file extra ‘notches’ into the switch pot to allow these extra positions, but the actual 5-way switch was available by then as well.  I point this out because I’ve never had it apart and don’t know for certain if the tech filed the existing switch or replaced it with a 5-way.  It works perfectly. Price – I’ve seen some pretty silly pricing of these guitars online.  I wish.  This guitar has a very realistic price for all that it is.  Of all the ’74 Strats available and recently sold online, I find none to fully compare – unless you’re only a collector and the tuners bother you.  Otherwise, if you’ve read this far be assured this guitar will please you immensely! Thanks for looking.  Bid with confidence, I am a long time ebay seller and have 100% positive feedback!  If you have a problem, please contact me and I will make it right.  Item must be paid within 3 days of auction’s close – PayPal only.  Please ask questions prior to bidding.  I reserve the right to cancel bids from buyers whom I consider to have an unacceptable eBay record.  Buyers with no feedback must contact me before bidding.  All sales are final.
