Up for sale, a 1988 Fender Jazzmaster '62 reissue electric guitar in excellent condition and perfect working order. One of the earliest Fender Japan Jazzmasters we've ever had in the shop, this guitar embodies the quality craftsmanship associated of the Japanese line of Fender instruments and the Fujigen factory in particular, where the early "Made in Japan" Fenders were produced. Although officially designated the JM66 model, the features of this Jazzmaster are actually associated with a '62 reissue, with dot inlay on the slab rosewood fretboard, a "Spaghetti" logo, and Strat style knobs. Also very unique to this model is the ash body, with prominent grain highlighted by the sunburst finish. Traditionally a tone wood and finish combination not seen on a Jazzmaster, it's quite visually striking on this particular guitar and the ash body adds a certain midrange punch and fullness which is very complimentary to the pickups.
A textbook example of everything we love about the Jazzmaster, the instrument has plenty of twang and sparkle on tap, with a range of powerful and defined tones from the two single coil pickups, and warm, wooly sounds when switched to the rhythm circuit on the guitar's lower body horn. Weighing in at 8lbs 8oz, this is a substantial feeling and resonant Jazzmaster too! Setup to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar where we specialize in Fender Offset instruments, this Jazzmaster is dialed in and ready for the stage and studio with fresh 10-46 strings. The vintage amber tinted maple neck has a comfortable medium C shaped profile that borders on the more slender side of things with nicely rounded shoulders and a smooth gloss finish. The nut is a hair wider than most MIJ Jazzmasters at just under 1 11/16", while the scale length is a full 25 1/2", and the fretboard has a vintage Fender spec 7 1/4" radius. The frets are in great shape, only showing wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5, with fainter flattening of the crowns beneath the G and B string until roughly fret 8, and no wear further up the neck. The frets retain their full factory height, the truss rod is responsive, and the neck is straight with ideal action and no buzzing or dead spots anywhere on the fretboard. The headstock sports an Pre-CBS style "Spaghetti" Jazzmaster logo with Kluson style tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. All of the electronics work as they should, and the wiring and pickups are stock. The vibrato unit works smoothly, and the chrome on the bridge and vibrato still has plenty of shine left. The tortoise pickguard and white plastic parts are quite clean overall and uniformly aged. The three-tone sunburst finish is very vibrant, highlighting the prominent grain of the ash body. There is wear down to the bare wood on the bass side waist edge of the body, as well as one modest scratch on the top bass side lower bout, and a few assorted nicks and dings on the body as a whole. On the back there are also a couple faint outlines of stickers which were previously removed. The "Made in Japan" designation and H prefix serial number are present at the heel of the neck just above the early "Fender" embossed neck plate. This JM66 Jazzmaster from Japan is a rare and early example of a now discontinued and desirable model that adheres to vintage Fender specs!
