Up for sale, a 1963 Epiphone Sorrento, model E452T, in excellent condition with a rare and original "Royal Olive" nitro lacquer finish. Produced in the USA under the ownership of Gibson at their Kalamazoo, Michigan factory, this Epiphone Sorrento sports a single early Gibson PAF mini humbucker! Essentially a humbucker equipped version of Gibson's ES-125T model, the Sorrento is in a class all its own, with a fully hollow 16" wide body and a clear, bell-like tone that has the fullness of a humbucker and the sparkle and top end of a single coil. These early mini humbuckers truly are a "best of both worlds" pickup, with great harmonic content, and a glassy, touch-sensitive responsiveness. Whether you want clear, defined cleans or fully overdriven bliss, this Sorrento performs admirably and it has an impressive acoustic presence as well, with a clear, powerful bark when you play the guitar unplugged. It weighs only 5lbs 2oz too. This Sorrento has been professionally setup with 11-50 strings here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar.The neck has a comfortable medium C profile that is fairly slender down at the nut in terms of overall depth, growing a touch chunkier in the higher registers of the fretboard. The Brazilain rosewood fretboard is a particularly nice cut, with deep chocolate stripes in the grain, accented by Epiphones oval pearl inlays. The guitar has been professionally refretted, and the current jumbo frets have plenty of height and life, showing only light uniform wear in the first position, with virtually no wear beyond fret 5. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, a real rarity on these models, as Gibson/Epiphone started narrowing the nut width on all Epiphone models in mid '63. Only models from 1960-early '63 have the coveted full 1 11/16" width, and production totals for these early years of the Sorrento model are very small. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact with clean white buttons. All of the electronics work as they should, with the previously noted original Gibson nickel cover mini humbucker and an untouched wiring harness with stock reflector cap knobs. The bridge is a modern Gibson Historic aged ABR-1, which matches the patina on the original trapeze tailpiece. The rosewood bridge base is original, as is the white three-ply pickguard with original Epiphone Epsilon "E" sticker.Cosmetically, this is an honestly played and original guitar with a vibrant and rare Royal Olive greenburst finish. Fading from yellow to deep green on the maple top and an even darker, richer shade of green on the mahogany back and sides, this is a textbook example of this classic burst with a moderately yellowed clear coat that only makes the green more prominent. The finish is 100% original with vertical lacquer checking and zero touchup or overspray. The guitar is structurally sound with no repairs and the finish shows only some light scuffing on the back and a few assorted tiny nicks on the body.
This rare and early single pickup Sorrento retains its coveted PAF mini humbucker and rare Royal Olive finish!
