1964 Gibson SG Special Serial # 237967 This guitar has been one of my long term “keepers” for about 13 years that I really wasn’t planning to sell. But sometimes cashflow has to win the argument over sentiment, so here we go. This isn’t a guitar that needs any excuses. Its 100% original, 100% functional and 110% good. And when I say “original”, I do mean including the frets plus every screw and solder joint, the whole shebang. And no part has ever been modified or needed any kind of repair. Overall physical condition is very good for 50 years plus. There are just typical minor dings & dongs as expected here and there around the body edges, the worst bits being a couple of old paint chips, one at the tip of the upper horn and the other below the pickguard as highlighted in the photos. And the colour is still a nice rich cherry red, not faded to brown. The frets are in very good shape, almost unworn since last dressed and with enough height remaining not to need a refret for many years ahead. The action is low and buzz-free, and this is a great player all round. Although this is a 1964 guitar, it still has the shallower neck profile of the 1961/2 “Les Paul” SGs. This anachronism noticeably reduces the usual SG tendency to neck-heaviness – particularly useful as the overall weight is less than 6.5 lbs. The P90s have plenty of punch and tell it like it is the way only old SG Specials and Juniors can – very evocative of Pete Townshend, Zal Cleminson etc. back in the day, and highly enjoyable whenever a blast of sheer glorious raucousness is called for. This is a guitar that has always brought a smile to my face and I’m sure will do the same for you. To complete the package, this comes with a slightly later Gibson hard case (early 70s, purple-lined) in solid condition with all working hinges and latches (2 latches recently replaced). Shipping prices include insurance to the full sale value.
