In the early days of ragtime jazz around the First World War the instruments were a little different, especially clarinets. I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy was written for the "tinny" sounds of a metal, silver plated clarinet creating the title of "tin pan alley". During the Depression and Second World War metal was a premium so clarinets were made of wood giving them a totally different tone and leading to the rise of such people as Benny Goodman and the big band era. Wonderful instruments that they are, wood clarinets cannot produce the "tin pan alley" sounds of earlier times. Any purist will tell you that a metal clarinet is needed for that sound. The instrument you are looking at was produced in Indiana by the Pan American Co. in the early twenties and has been professional rebuilt by my technician to near perfection
