Up for sale, a 1968 Vox Apollo model V266 in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Manufactured in Italy at the Eko factory exclusively for Vox, this Apollo was only produced for two short years from 1967-68, and is one of the less common vintage Vox hollowbody offerings, boasting a single neck pickup and built in effects, all of which still sound great. The tone is unmistakably Vox, with a jangle and snap that screams "British Invasion" balanced by the hollowbody construction that adds some midrange and low end heft to the single coil pickup. More robust than a Fender single coil in many respects, this Apollo has a sound all its own with a more percussive quality and rounder sounding notes. Of course flipping on the built-in distortion or treble boost circuit (or both), brings a whole different sonic range to the table, and the buzzsaw roar of the onboard gain sounds particularly good. The built-in E tuner functions too, and all the effects are powered by a 9V battery hidden beneath the snap-on rear cover. There guitar weighs in at a mere 6lbs 10oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Vox Apollo is dialed in for optimal action and freshly restrung with 10-46 strings. The three-piece maple neck has a substantial D shaped profile, which flattens out at the center of the profile, providing the perfect place to rest your thumb. The profile shoulders are nice and round, and the fretboard width and depth stay fairly consistent as you move up the neck, only growing slightly deeper and wider. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearloid block inlays and original frets which are remarkably clean, showing virtually no wear and retaining their full, original height. The scale length measures 25" and the nut width is 1 5/8", with the original aluminum nut present behind the zero fret. On the headstock, the original Vox branded tuners are intact, and these are some of the most reliable and smoothest turning vintage tuners we've ever experienced, with near perfect chrome plating too. The "Vox" name is inlaid on the headstock face, and "Made in Italy for Vox" is stamped on the reverse side.On the body, all of the electronics work as they should and all of the original hardware is intact, including the chrome tailpiece with Vox insert, three-ply pickguard, white reflector cap knobs, and floating bridge. The neck plate retains the fragile "Apollo" sticker, and the padded cover on the back shows almost no wear and snaps cleanly into place. In terms of cosmetic wear, there is very little to report. The finish checking seen on most Italian Vox instruments is fairly minimal on this example, and there's a bit of scuffing beneath the floating bridge base as well as a light finish scratch or two on the guitar as a whole, but overall it's one of the nicer vintage Vox guitars we've ever had in the shop!
The original hardshell case is included.
