An exceptionally rare and special ukulele, this model 839 was designed by Martin exclusively for their big customer Wurlitzer, and only made for four years. From 1922-25 Martin made just 127 of these. This customer model combines a fancy 5K fingerboard with a 3K body. Some people call it a "3K plus" or even a "4K". But the Wurlitzer catalog calls it model 839. We can date this Wurlitzer to 1922, the first year the model was offered, by the rare spring-loaded Grover friction tuners. The plain Koa body is also very typical of this early period. The ukulele is all original with the original finish and original parts. The vintage Bull's Head case completes the package. In the photos you can see some wear and tear from use. There is a thumb wear spot on the back of the neck, and lots of scuffs and scratches, especially on the headstock. I had several cracks repaired by a very skilled luthier who did a fantastic job. There are two repaired cracks on the back, a smaller one on the top, and a ding on the side, all repaired with hot hide glue. I had a difficult time getting the repairs to show in the photographs, I guess he did too good a job! The setup and sound are very rewarding, just as you would expect from such a fine vintage Martin.
