Up for sale, a 1964 National Westwood 77 vintage electric guitar in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. One of the rarer and more ornate Valco-made instruments to showcase their vaguely USA shaped "Map" body, the Westwood 77 features a solid mahogany body with a trio of pickups. These guitars feature two absolutely stunning sounding oversized single coil pickups and an additional hidden pickup located *inside* the compensated wooden bridge. This third pickup is known by the "Val-Trol" designation, which was National's term for this unique piezo style pickup. With individual volume and tone controls in the body adjacent to each pickup, the Westwood is an incredibly well designed tone machine, with a trio of distinct tones from the pickups that range from shimmering, acoustic-esque clean, to overwound single coil punch to smooth, mellow jazz tones at the neck. Featherweight at 7lbs on the dot, this National is very easy on the back and has a sweet, prominent acoustic voice. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, dialed in for ideal action with fresh 11-50 strings. The mahogany neck has a fairly slender C shaped profile that gains a bit of depth and roundness in the shoulders up the neck. The original slender fretwire is in fantastic shape, and these frets retain their full, factory height, with only very faint wear on the crowns of the G and B strings on frets 1-3, with virtually no wear further up the neck. The action stays low and comfortable all the way up the neck, playing cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. Behind the zero fret, the nut measures 1 11/16" in width and the scale is 24 1/2", two measurements that will feel comfortable and intuitive for players who love their Gibsons. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners with oversized tulip buttons are intact, turn smoothly, and hold pitch well. The metal "National" logo is intact on the gumby-shaped headstock too.On the body, all of the stock electronics work as they should, and the pair of single coils in oversized chrome covers deliver full, well-rounded tones with a balanced EQ response and a bit of twang on the top end. Each pickup has its own volume and tone control located directly above each pickup. The master volume and three-way pickup switch allow for more conventional, on the fly tonal tweaking as well. The electronics are untouched, with original solder joints and CTS pots that date back to the 7th week of 1964 (this also corresponds with the silver foil serial number sticker with the "1" prefix on the back of the headstock). All of the original hardware is included, with much of the original Art Deco-themed silkscreened graphics present on the chrome trapeze tailpiece and pickup covers. The small cream knobs are original and clean, with a larger top hat knob for the Master Volume and corresponding top hat switch tip. Perhaps the must visually alluring aspect of the guitar is the pickguard, which sports white pinstriping and a small blue and gold "National" shield. The guard is raised up off the body and transparent, complimenting the corresponding transparent bridge base on the Val-Trol pickup. Cosmetically, this is a very well kept vintage instrument, with some nicks and dings around the edges of the carved mahogany body, most notable on the back treble side lower bout edge, where there's some wear through the finish down to the bare mahogany. The original black plastic back cover also has some requisite scratches and a couple small chips around the mounting screw holes. There are also some nicks around the headstock joint, while the neck profile remains very clean. There is no serious or structural wear of any kind on this 100% original National Westwood, and it's a guitar that comes from our personal collection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar.The original form fit gray speckled tolex hardshell case is included.
