Up for sale, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Junior in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Crafted in arguably Gibson's most iconic year, this double cutaway version of the Junior has that famed '59 neck profile that feels substantial, infinitely playable, and plenty round. The sound is everything you expect a great Jr. to be, with an acoustic voice that is extremely authoritative and clear, causing the entire body to resonate when you strike a chord. And with the perfect growl and harmonic richness of the P-90 pickup, this Gibson truly delivers on the brand's golden era reputation. Unlike many Les Pauls, this one's very easy on the back at a mere 7lbs 8oz, yet still feels very robust when you dig in and balances well on a strap. For sweet P-90 single coil tone that can range from sizzling twang to roaring, all out raucousness through your favorite tube amp, this guitar has a versatility and tonal depth that belies its simple yet elegant appointments. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and currently strung with 10-46 strings, this guitar has low, comfortable action and can accommodate a lighter or heavier string gauge with ease.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a full 1 11/16" nut width and the kind of profile that has become the golden standard for Gibson profiles. The C shape is extremely full and round, with generous shoulders that fill the entire palm. A neck of this size is still surprisingly manageable for smaller hands and a neck this robust truly has much to do with the overall tone and resonance of the instrument. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard features the original fretwire, which has been cleanly leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime. There's still some meat left on the frets and definitely enough for another level in the future, with virtually no fretwear at this time, given the recent dress. There is no wear into the fretboard itself and the guitar plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots and a responsive truss rod.On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact with their original white buttons, and although a different tuner set was at one time installed, the originals are back on the guitar. There is light patina on the gear housings and all tuners turn as they should and hold pitch well. The original serial number is still vibrant and clearly inked on the back of the headstock, along with the gold silkscreen Gibson logo and "Les Paul Junior" script text on the headstock's face. The electronics work as they should, with original Centralab pots that date back to the 6th week of 1958 and a famed "Bumblebee" tone capacitor. The pickup also has its original windings and reads at a healthy 8.17k ohms. The wraparound tailpiece and studs are factory spec replacements courtesy of Pigtail. The original P-90 cover, pickguard, back plate, strap buttons, and bell knobs are all present. Beneath the pickup, the route was at one time very slightly enlarged to accommodate a humbucker. We've had the route filled with mahogany and recut to original spec, with light nitro lacquer touchup in the route only to closely match the unfaded shade of Cherry present beneath the pickguard.
In terms of cosmetic wear, this is a gorgeous example sure to satisfy collectors and serious players alike. The top has a hint of the original Cherry color left, although it now is a deeper shade of Walnut, while the back of the guitar (as well as the original finish beneath the guard) are more vibrant and red. There is fine lacquer checking across the entire body and neck, and this guitar is crack-free, with no headstock or heel issues to report! Aside from a few assorted small nicks and dings associated with honest playwear, there is a small spot of wear through the finish on the treble side waist of the body (essentially at the far end of the pick path) and a few more concentrated small marks near the input jack. An extra strap button hole was also added to the bass side body horn. The neck profile is very clean, with only one small mark of wear near the bass side edge of the profile on the 1st fret.A vintage Gibson black tolex hardshell case with red plush interior is included.
