This is a 1929 Olds Bb trumpet made during the first year that Olds started making trumpets.  There was not a model number, but we've referred to it by its bore size, LM or Large Medium.  With serial number 167, it is among a handfull of known surviving trumpets from the first year of production.   The now inactive "Olds Register" lists the earliest number as "7", but all the other early Olds trumpets begin with a "1", so it is likely that the series began with "100" or "101".   Regardless, this particular horn would be the 3rd or 4th oldest Olds trumpet known based on these records. This horn was acquired from the collection of a major Olds collector who is liquidating his collection.  It has been in the same family for many years, but its early history is not known. The horn has had some work done in the past, but nothing is known of who did the work or when. The trumpet has been relacquered.  Some of the engraving is thin.  There is also a solder patch on the bell, just before the crook.  Valve compression is good, so the valves may have been replated.  It may be possible to have the engraving restored as well as repair the bell in a less noticeable fashion, but we thought it best to leave the horn with its original engraving, even though it shows wear. The trumpet plays well and has a good tone.  There was no push rod on these early Olds trumpets.   The valve guides and top caps on these early Olds trumpets were different than later models.  There are no top cap felts and the top caps are similar to Besson and other trumpets of this era.  The valve guides were changed on Olds trumpets a year or two after this one was made, so having all the original parts is significant.  There are matching serial numbers on all the valve components. There is not a case or mouthpiece with this trumpet.
