Description
Items Included: Case Valves Type: Rotary

For sale is a civil war era 4 valve side action (SARV) cornet / trumpet made by Christian R Stark.  The receiver on it is very large - a modern trumpet mouthpiece fits.  with a modern trumpet mouthpiece, it plays in high bitch Bb (the slide is long enough to lower it to low pitch Bb).  The 4th valve lowers it to A.  There is a Christian R Stark instrument shown on page 23 of the Garofalo / Elrod "A Pictorial History of Civil War Era Musical Instruments, which is listed as ca 1860.  Since Stark markings change through the time he made instruments (The New Langwill Index lists hime as a maker from 1856-1880), I believe this instrument was made about the same time. All the slides pull.  Valves are tight.  It was lacquered at some point, and some of the lacquer is worn.  There are some small dents as well.  However, it is a playable instrument s is.  Beautiful engraving around the bell garland.  Brass bell / Nickel leadpipe, valves, and valve tubing.  Comes with a Coffin case in good condition.
