Here we have a very regrettable sale of my 1963 'pre-serial' Ludwig down beat drum kit.I have owned and enjoyed playing this kit for just over two years having purchased it from a friend of mine who had owned it for many years. I am subsequently fortunate enough to know it's restoration history which I shall list below. The kit is a factory matched kit that was originally in black diamond pearl with nickel plated hardware. Around six years ago my friend decided that although he loved the kit sound he couldn't put up with the black diamond pearl and nickel any longer and set about a full professional restoration. The rewrap was done using genuine Delmar wrap by none other than master drum guru Eddie Ryan in London (see signatures inside), and is easily as good as a factory finish in every way.Much of the original hardware was re-chromed or replaced using genuine ludwig parts. The replacements were used mainly for practical reasons, for example a later ratchet style rail mount and bracket with memory lock was used making the tom mount solid and totally useable. The bass drum spurs were originally two pairs of disappearing ones but were upgraded to the classic Ludwig 'fold down' type with the original holes being filled by Eddie Ryan. There are no other 'non-original ' holes on the kit. The triple flanged hoops are heavy gauge chrome on steel replacements. The 12" & 14" drums are finished in their factory white paint with the bass drum being unpainted which was the common practice in 1963. The bass drum hoops were also refinished by Eddie Ryan to a beautiful high gloss lacquer featuring new inlays. All drums are sporting their original 'pre-serial' keystone badges professionally refitted using new correct brass grommets.The 12"&14" drums are three ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany with maple re-ringsThe bass drum is three ply mahogany/poplar/maple with maple re-rings. This kit sounds incredible and they really do defy their size. They are versatile and it's understandable why everyone from Ringo to Morello used them. I've loved gigging this kit over the past two years and sadly it has to go to finance a Ringo maple Ludwig Hollywood I'm purchasing. I am including the protection racket cases for the drums too so the kit is ready to roll!!!Hopefully I've not forgotten anything else!Please look at the pictures and feel free to ask any questions.
