At auction is an antique Heckel bassoon #4367 built in 1902. This instrument would make an excellent period instrument as it has the original unaltered 1902 keying system as well as the original 1902 finish. The keys are solid nickel, NOT nickel plating! I am the third owner of this bassoon and have owned it since 1962. Major restoration on the larger long joint tendon and one of the bocals was undertaken in about 1967 by Mac Gibbon, a woodwind restoration specialist and builder of custom bassoons from Milwaukee, WI. A recent renovation took place in 1996. At that time all pads were replaced, key springs replaced, key action was adjusted, all nickel keys were polished and the u tube cork gasket was replaced and sealed. All tendon corks were replaced at this time as well. The woodwind specialist who undertook the 1996 renovations strongly suggested that I leave the original finish alone as refinishing may alter the original tone. Paperwork for the 1996 renovations are still in my possession. Sine the renovations of 1996 the bassoon has maybe seen 20 hours of playing time. I am the third owner of this bassoon.
