Up for sale, a 1960's Hagstrom III in excellent condition and perfect working order. Built in Sweden in the mid/late '60s, the Hagstrom III (known as the F-300 in the United States) boasts three single coil pickups with a bevy of tone switches and pickup combinations. Clearly influenced by both the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson SG, this Hagstrom manages to be its own unique entity. With a single Master Volume knob and six pickup/tone switches, a myriad of tonal options are possible, from squawky Strat-like "in-between" tones, to snappy bridge pickup sounds, to rich neck pickup tones that have a full, warm low end. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this guitar has great action and solid intonation, weighing in at 6lbs 12oz.The birch neck has a slim C profile, with a 1 9/16" nut width that gives the guitar a fast feel that frets easily and plays comfortably up the neck. The neck profile has also been lightly sanded to remove the finish although the profile shape has not been modified. The teak fretboard features the original slender frets which show moderate, uniform wear on frets 1-3, with lighter wear beneath the G and B strings until roughly fret 7, and virtually no wear further up the neck. The headstock sports the original sealed back nickel tuners which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The original "Hagstrom III" waterslide decal is intact on the headstock and surprisingly complete. The body is one piece of solid wood (abachi being the most likely candidate for the body wood) with beveled edges, finished in the original vibrant three-tone sunburst, and topped with a triple ply black-white-black pickguard. The vibrato is a Hagstrom original, which has a fairly tight feel similar to a Strat, responding well to quick surfy shimmies and deeper dives with ease (vibrato arm not included). The bridge is original as well, along with the seven white two-way switches and Master Volume knob.
Cosmetically, this guitar shows some light, honest playwear, with targeted faint buckle rash across the bass side upper bout on the back, some wear in the pick path, and a few stray finish nicks and scuffs, mostly concentrated near the input jack on the treble side lower bout edge. Overall, this guitar has weathered the decades well and remained original and completely structurally sound. The finish is still quite vibrant and the hardware is in fantastic shape. This Hagstrom is a great way to get a wide range of useable vintage tones out of a gigworthy and rarely seen instrument! The original form fit chipboard case is included.
