Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. While we've had dozens of vintage Jazzmasters here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this one has a neck that is very unique and favorable. Chunky, deep, and just a bit under 1 11/16" wide at the nut, it's the most substantial profile we've ever felt on a Pre-CBS example. Plenty meaty at the nut in terms of profile depth and quickly gaining very full shoulders and "baseball bat" status by the time you reach the 7th fret, this neck fills the palm and offers a serious grip. As one would expect, the acoustic resonance and punch of the guitar is greatly helped by this seriously thick neck profile too.Powerful, resonant and extremely versatile, this Jazzmaster is everything you'd expect from a guitar produced at the tail end of Fender's golden age and weighs 7lbs 14oz. Acoustically, the guitar has a very authoritative sound that translates well through the two original black bobbin pickups. Able to deliver everything from sparkle and twang in the bridge position to wooly and complex tones at the neck, this Jazzmaster boasts a distinct and usable tone in every position. Flip a switch to the oft disregarded (and infinitely cool) Rhythm Circuit and you have a whole new palette of dark voicings meant to appeal to the "Jazz" player that never really got on with this instrument, but a tonal range that really loves a heavily overdriven tube amp or sputtery fuzz pedal in need of a bit of thickening. The chunky neck profile feels fantastic, the action is low, and the guitar has just been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12 -52 flatwound strings.With the Jazzmaster emerging in recent years as the real kingpin of the offset Fender community (basses withstanding), well preserved Pre-CBS ones like the one here are becoming tougher to come by, and what sets this guitar apart is the conditions under which it lived for decades. A two-owner example, this instrument was played sparingly by the original owner and stored by the second for the past 30 years. As such, the burst is about as vibrant and unfaded an example as we've ever seen.
The one-piece maple neck has a surprisingly deep and chunky profile, and it measures .846" deep at the 1st fret and .993" measured at the 12th fret. The veneer Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports the original clay dot inlays with stock fretwire that is virtually flawless. These frets benefit from having essentially only being played with flatwound strings and as such retain their full original height, well rounded crowns, and have no wear to report. The neck profile is also very glossy and clean with practically no wear. On the headstock, the original "Spaghetti" Jazzmaster waterslide decal is present and minty. The original single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact and still work well. On the heel of the neck, the original 4SEPT63 stamp is clean and legible translating to "4" (Jazzmaster model number), September, 1963.All of the electronics work as they should, and the pots have just been given a thorough cleaning, turning smoothly and without static. All of the original wiring is intact and untouched, with stock brass shielding tubs. The two stock black bobbin pickups have their original windings and healthy output measuring a whopping 9.54k ohms at the bridge and 7.49k in the neck position. Both pickups have their original small yellow date stamps from April 17th, 1964 as well, a feature only seen on the last hand wound black bobbin pickups used in the Pre-CBS era. The Stackpole pots date to the 8th week of 1964. The original nitrate tortoise pickguard is intact, with the kind of deep red and yellows that have been imitated (but not duplicated!) by every Fender tort guard since. The guard sits nice and flat with virtually no shrinkage and only one small patch of genuine vintage nitrate tort adjacent to the treble side bridge insert , as the insert position was moved by the previous owner and subsequently put back to stock by the second owner. The original vibrato tailpiece works very smoothly with the stock arm, and this elegant design responds instantly to the lightest touch for quick semitone flutters, surfy dives and deeper bends, returning with ease to the original pitch. The neck plate has its original "L" serial number and the chrome plating has incredible shine and sparingly little surface patina.Cosmetically, this guitar shows quintessential "buckle rash" on the back, with a few spots of notable wear down to the bare alder and an assortment of small nicks and scratches almost exclusively relegated to the back of the guitar and contoured edges particularly clustered near the input jack and rear strap button. In contrast, the top is particularly clean and the sunburst is as vibrant and rich as we've ever seen. The central red ring of the three-tone burst (typically the first to fade) is notably wide and deep. In a similar fashion, the neck profile and headstock face are clean as can be. The only mod to the guitar was a repositioning of the treble side bridge insert by the original owner (he was purportedly chasing improved intonation, although the stock bridge position intonates perfectly). The added hole for the bridge insert was doweled and the guitar restored to stock, with an aforementioned small piece of nitrate tort used to patch the added hole for a clean and consistent look. Otherwise, there are a few small nicks on the top, but overall this is an exceptional example of a Pre-CBS Jazzmaster!The original black tolex no-logo hardshell case is included. This case is very well kept with clean leather ends, latches that spring open, and the original handle.
