This is a 1967 Elkhart Conn 8DS double french horn (serial number H58596). The original bell of this horn suffered an unfortunate accident, so we decided that the best thing for the horn would be to purchase a brand-new "V8D" bell from C.G. Conn, since that is the closest thing we can get to the original bell. The 8D is Conn's symphony double horn, and is constructed from solid nickel silver. The horns built in the Elkhart factory are considered to be the best that Conn ever made; this one is an H-Series Elkhart horn. The horn plays very well. The valves move well with good compression, and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are only a few very small dings and pings throughout the horn, as well as some isolated patches of light scratching and light pitting. This horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage or interchangeability. All the minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a Conn backpack style screw-bell case and mouthpiece in good condition. How this horn plays: Big, full and warm sound. The tone is smooth, rich and colorful. The horn is very responsive and free-blowing, making for quick action and flexibility. The horn has an excellent dynamic range. The low and high registers speak very well and play smoothly. The Bb side timbre is slightly brighter than the F side, but not enough to hinder switching between the two sides while playing.
