A rosewood flute marked on all joints in an oval cartouche:Sun// PIERRE Godfroy jeune//A PARIS//PG (monogram)The keywork and fittings are silver.The pads play but may need changing and the joints will benefit from fresh corks.Length fully assembled approx.61 cmSounding length approx 53.5 cmEmbouchure hole approx.10 by 9 mmPierre Godfroy jeune was the younger brother of Clair Godfroy ainé. He was active in Paris from about 1823 to 1845. In the "Bottin" report for 1823 it is recorded that he was "known for the perfection of his instruments and particularly for the flute" . According to the main source book: Tula Giannini's "Great Flute Makers of France" very few of his instruments survive and a 5 keyed flute similar to this one exemplifying his fine work can be seen on plate 37 of "Great Flute Makers of France" .An instrument of similar style and quality to those of Clair Godfroy but very much harder to find, this example being the first ever to be seen on the pages of eBay.Well worth considering if you don't have one.Please see all the photos.Good luck to all bidders !
