Up for auction is a lovely Oskar Ullmann rotary valve bass trumpet. This instrument is in good condition and plays well. The valves work well and all slides move. This horn is constructed from yellow brass. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few dings as well as some rippling throughout the instrument. There is also a brazed repair on the bell rim as well as some very well done patches throughout the instrument, which is typical for a European horn of this age. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to maintain its shine. If fingerprints are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with its original mouthpiece. The exact date of manufacture is unknown but this bass trumpet was built between 1907 and 1943 when the Ullmann workshop was in operation.  The engraving on the bell reads: "J.C. Penzels Nachf.     Oskar Ullmann        - Leipzig -"  "Nachf." is an abbreviation for the German word "nachfolger" meaning "successor" in English. Oskar (aka Oscar) Ullmann was born in 1876 in Vienna, Austria. His Leipzig workshop, along with the Leipzig workshop of Schopper, were the successors (nachfolger) to Johann Christoph Penzel (1817-1879). J.C. Penzel was the successor of C.F. Sattler who worked on trombone designs. Sattler helped to develop the modern large bore slide trombone; the Sattler workshop was also involved in the transition from rotary valve trombone to slide trombone with the Vienna Opera Orchestra. After the death of Sattler, Penzel took over the Sattler workshop, thus renaming the workshop to the Penzel workshop. Penzel took the wide bore trombone developed by Sattler and gave it it's modern form as used until the mid-twentieth century. Penzel's trombone design is designated the "Penzel trombone," "Penzel Model" or "Leipzig model." After J.C. Penzel's death his son Christoph Hermann Robert Penzel took over the workshop for a year before also perishing in 1898. The Penzel workshop was under threat of closing. Oskar Ullmann was employed by the Penzel workshop in 1903 and eventually took over the workshop in 1907. The Ullmann workshop operated until 1943 when its workshop, along with the Schopper workshop, were destroyed by bombing raids. The Schopper workshop briefly reopened after World War II, but the Ullmann workshop did not.
