AMPEX built the best tape recorders after WWII. The pre-Amplifiers of the AMPEX model 602 are highly sought after as they have a very sweet sound only tube amps can provide. These pre-amps have very low noise and distortion and are for these reasons highly sought after by professional musicians and producers alike.
This auction is for the complete portable model 602 Stereo Tape Recorder. The pre-amplifiers are CAT.No. 02-0211-02, serial number 49,627; and 02-0211-03, serial number 50,645. The two pre-amplifiers are not totally identical as only one has a power plug.
Both pre-amps have the standard Beyer "peanut" input transformers, see pictures #11 and 12; and both pre-amplifiers also have the optional line input transformer mounted into the octal sockets, see pictures #12 and 23.
Both pre-amps are equipped with tubes, the power transformers have both the double shilds in place, see pictures #19 and 20 with the shild removed.
There is extensive material on the Internet on the performance, how to use and upgrade these pre-amps (removing the wires interfacing with the tape recorder), and even how to mount these pre-amps into a 19" rack. There are so called "ears" available on eBay to mount these pre-amps into a 19" rack. To see one of these listings, This Tape Recorder is built like a tank, the total weight is 40 lb and 8 onces! Before packing it! If you want to save on shipping in case you don't need the actual tape drive and only the two pre-amplifiers, I will pack the amps with the case only and mail that to you. In this event, please don't pay and let me know so I can email you an updated invoice. In case you intend to use the tape drive to, please note that one of the screws holding the drive in the case is missing (see picture #38), and also note that one of the knobs is broken (see picture #39). As some of these tape drives are being discarded, it should not be difficult to find one of these knobs. Please note that these pre-amps and the Tape Drive are not tested ans are sold as is. Please look at the pictures to see what you are buying. It is possible that you need to replace some parts. I would also recommend to replace the ITT CANNON 3 prong connectors with new ones.
I just bought two NOS Caannon 5113 3 pin XLR connectors to replace the ones which need replacement. They are exactly the same but NOS, perfect replacement! These will be included in the deal!
