Emmett BerryEmmett Berry was a jazz trumpeter who lived from (1915 – 1993). Berry started his musical career playing with one of the most influential arrangers and band leaders in jazz history, Fletcher Henderson. Over the years Emmett played with the Earl Hines Band, Teddy Wilson’s Sextet, Lucky Millinder Orchestra, Lionel Hampton Orchestra, John Kirby Sextet and a host of jazz legends. He then went on to play with Count Basie for 5 years. He also accompanied the one and only Billie Holiday on many of her recordings. Berry was known as a top session musician. He was one of the 57 musicians photographed in the historic photo by Art Kane called “A Great Day in Harlem.” From 1958 until now, this famous group portrait of notable musicians photographed in front of a in , New York City, has remained an important object in the history of jazz.In 1959 Composer/Arranger Gil Evans hired Emmett Berry and some of the best session musicians in New York to play with Miles Davis on “The Sound of Jazz” which was one of the first American TV shows to feature jazz artists. Jimmie Cobb who was the drummer for the Miles Davis band said “Everybody wanted to be in Miles Band, ‘cause he had the top band in the world at that time.”Charlie Allen made this mouthpiece for Emmett Berry. Two other trumpeters, Doc Cheatham and Roy Eldridge also played the Miles TV gig and they were also known to play Charlie Allen mouthpieces. We have one with Doc Cheatham’s name marked on the cup by Charlie Allen. This is a very rare find!
